perhaps not the same, but one of the oldest books in The Parker Library (poss the Augustine Gospels?) has a simple but beautifully coloured picture of an eagle captioned not "Aquila" but "IMAGO aquilam" just in case anyone looked at it and went "but that's NOT an eagle, it's a PICTURE of one"

I have a friend who used to insist on calling the shop "Everything's One Pound", because that's what the sign said. And another friend who used to shudder if people referred to the department store "Fenwick's", rather than "Fenwick". 😵‍💫
