American University peeps: Please sign our compact demanding AU's administration refuse to sign trump's compact. Faculty, staff, students, and alumni signatures welcome! Let's build a wall of support that AU can't deny!
American University faculty, staff, students & alumni: please sign our chapter statement asking AU to refuse to sign the trump compact & proactively plan how to effectively respond to govt. pressure to sign. The compact isn't dead & new iterations are likely coming down the pike. La lucha continua!

This is stomach turning. Imagine being an 11 year old child whose father did this to his mother. Your sense of safety would collapse overnight and it won't easily be rebuilt.
This article heavily implies that ICE is being used in a custody dispute to help Karoline Leavitt's brother get his son and have the mother locked up in ICE detention
"A woman with a family connection to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Revere, Massachusetts."

Thought provoking to say the least. Definitely worth a read if you live in MoCo where almost every land use decision gets treated like an Armageddon moment. Plus, I wasn't expecting a shout out to a Marxist Political Scientist whkse work I've read and enjoyed!
Opinion: The problem at public meetings isn't who shows up, but the roles that the people at public meetings are expected to play
What are planning hearings actually for?

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

All hail Silver Spring!
There are so many wonderful things about the Silver Spring Thanksgiving parade, but the very best part is all the confused but enthusiastic toddlers dancing in folk costumes that weigh more than they do. America, baby!

The General Assembly should consider limiting the fees public institutions can charge for FOIA requests. It's unreasonable that an Assembly member had to cover $4,500 fee out of pocket for a request, or that @vpm.org was quoted 34k for their request. Fees shouldn't undermine the spirit of the law.
Virginia lawmakers and University of Virginia faculty are raising alarm bells about ongoing patterns of secrecy and lack of transparency surrounding former UVA President Jim Ryan's resignation in June.

They walked it back but damage is done. Every year I show this video abt WWII death tallies to my students. It's staggering--70 million people died. That's what Nazis brought the word. Now that most soldiers have died WWII revisionism is in full swing. We need to hold the line against these ghouls

I wasn't expecting David Ignatius to write such a sterile essay weighing MSB's 'pros & cons' as if the murder & dismemberment of his former @washingtonpost.com colleague Jamal Khashoggi was just a standard entry in the con category. They used a bonesaw to carve him up. How do you ever get past that?

Donald Trump could have just kept his mouth shut about Jamal Khashoggi.

But to smear a dead journalist, while sitting with the person accused of orchestrating his murder is just vile.

Every time this administration hits rock bottom, a trap door seems to open.

Cretin behavior.

@washingtonpost.com has a story today abt Saudi prince MSB coming to visit trump. MSB has been credibly accused of ordering the assassination & dismemberment of wapo editorialist Jamal Khashoggi. As of today, the editorial board has said nothing abt this, leaving the outrage to a lone columnist.

Im glad MTG is on a tear abt this. But I also find it hard to stomach the idea that anyone took trump seriously on this stuff. This is the guy who likes to grab them by the p*ssy & was credibly charged with rape. At some point people like Massie and MTG need to own up to who trump is and always was

Says something about the DC Press that People Magazine has done more about this story than any of their rags.
…and then the rest of the White House press corps pushed back against the president’s gratuitous insult aimed at one of their colleagues?

Oh wait! There’s no sign that anything like that happened!

Because access beats out solidarity, every day of the week.

Big props to our anonymous female economist for being too tired for that drink, because I'm sure it was tempting to go for the drink and accidentally spill it all over his smug face
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

Good to remeber Heritage Foundation spent a good deal of its cultural capital complaining about the way James Madison's Montpelier talks about slavery. In particular they didnt like an agreement to give the descendents of Montpelier's enslaved population more say on how the museum presented slavery.

As a person who grew up in the Bible belt (in the hometown of an infamous televangelist no less), i can't tell you how strange but wonderful it is to see clergy standing up for the poor & downtrodden. In my hometown the preachers were always standing up to judge the poor, queer folk, & uppity women.

Faculty power is a beautiful thing to see 🥰
WE WON. I am *begging* you to take note of who did this. *Not* UCLA admin—they’re still scuttling around behind closed doors, attempting to appease—but FACULTY AND STAFF, led by AAUP.
BREAKING: In AAUP et al v. Trump (wall-to-wall union lawsuit challenging the administration’s unlawful use of TItle VI to reshape the University of California system), the faculty and staff of the UC system WON!!!

We were granted our preliminary injunction! @aaup.org

This whole sorry episode also makes crystal clear that so called best practices on how university Boards of Trustees are constituted and operate need to be completely overhauled.
The AAUP - UVa has accused the Board of Visitors of limiting faculty seats on the presidential search committee.

The committee “is dominated by current and former members of the Board of Visitors and administrators...none of those members were selected by the faculty.”
