Seeing a lot of old and new friends here on Bluesky, so here's my intro / catch-up post:

- I now live in suburban MD just outside DC
- I design CRM/AMS databases & lead the teams that build them
- I'm a single mom supporting one of my children through a cancer relapse

There are no circumstances where human beings should be without food. There are no qualifications that make someone undeserving of access to food. If you are a human being, you should get food. I don’t care about ability, job status, legal status, or anything else. If people are hungry, feed them.

7. Food banks

(Remember I said I have a friend who's the ED of a big anti-hunger org/food bank? She's my source on this.)

Give money. Food banks get WAY more bang for your buck. Every $1 can provide as much as 3 meals.

But they will happily take that can of the wrong soup you grabbed by mistake.

The dialogue is a whole other thing but the bit about "fuck you shoot me I'll die for this shit" and the reaction is the crux here, from Gandhi's time on down, no authoritarian in history ever knows how to respond to this and it's why it beats them whenever deployed
"Man goes scorched earth on ICE agents kidnapping people in his hometown."

it is normal and ok to feel grief for the future you thought you were going to have*. It is normal and ok to go through waves of not feeling it and then feeling it twice as hard for no definable reason.

* don’t know details, but this covers a lot of bad things

The compartmentalization gymnastics we’re all doing right now is crazy work, like one second I’m like “I’ll just get the dill pickle hummus instead cause its in saIe” then on the drive home I’ll be all “ooh I wonder which AI-generated government watchlist I’m on” as I drink my little drink-drink
Low-stakes, high-certainty take of the day:

this is, objectively and scientifically, the best way to reheat pancakes

Why does everyone keep calling it “The Epstein Ballroom?” Please stop repeating “The Epstein Ballroom” because it is not called “The Epstein Ballroom!” Don’t tell the news that it’s called “The Epstein Ballroom” and please don’t repost this!!!!!

If you want to make a real local and tangible difference to people around you food banks is the way
food banks have already been under pressure over the past several years, and with SNAP benefits expiring they're going to be the only safety net for a lot of people

please donate what you can. $100 can feed several families for a month because of the discounts and purchasing power they have

I will donate $100 to the election campaign of the first democratic candidate to say “i dont care what it costs we’re bulldozing the ballroom on day 1 and for $1 you can enter into a raffle to drive the dozer for 15 minutes”

Gavin de Backer's THE GIFT OF FEAR can only be recced with caveats, but he has a whole thing in there about how "intuition" is often unconscious pattern-matching: you may not be able to identify the red flags in the moment, but they still put you on alert

Normalize using Chris Van Hollen as the good senator over Bernie. He went to El Salvador over Kilmar, he pointed out Israeli war crimes, and he backed Zohran and isn't backing Nazi tattoo guy while also not being one of the oldest senators.
Seriously, Bernie has terrible, terrible personal judgment. Tulsi Gabbard was *his girl* and she's a fucking Russian op and a Hindu nationalist scumbag who hates the gays. If we need an old white man to stan, Chris Van Hollen is RIGHT THERE and he is calling Israel out w/out being a dick about it.
it’s not a “theory” of everything per se, but I think Bill Bryson’s “A Short History of Nearly Everything” came as close as any book I’ve read.

Everyone is asking what will happen with the energy of the No Kings protests, and I’m telling you that if Republicans don’t reopen the government soon, you’re gonna see exactly where that energy accrued.
It is not widely reported, but Medi-Cal (Cali’s Medicaid) is set to end at the end of December because of the Government shutdown

And CalFresh (Cali’s food stamps) is set to end at the end of October

So millions of people will lose their food assistance & healthcare in a matter of weeks or months

They're… demolishing some of the East Wing of the White House, where the Presidential Emergency Operations Center nuclear bunker is, to then build a monstrously gaudy ballroom… damn near on *Top* of where the Presidential Emergency Operations Center nuclear bunker is.

Is that… do i have that right?

The NK march, by the most positive lens, was a demonstration expanding reach, shifting the Overton window, building confidence for those who are less committed or fluent in the context & issues. More simply, it’s a great on-ramp for normies, and delivers respectability for institutions that need it.

honestly i'm kind of in awe at this company ngl

like in any other country remodeling the symbol of the nation that is owned by the country would be a multiyear effort with massive research and contingency plans and remediations and etc

and these mad lads just let jimmy go nuts with a backhoe
I think it will grow in after his heart is broken and we see him assuming the emotionally-protective shell he will wear for the rest of the series / I mean his life.

did anybody else in the US watch The Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries and feel a visceral jolt when the whole pilot turns out to hinge on the lack of safe access to abortion in 1920s Australia and the women characters’ rage about it

like “oh wow okay this show was NOT made in this country”
Here is my most damning indictment of romance as a genre: we are currently living in a time when stalkers, rapists, and murderers are romance MMCs, but I doubt I could name more than 10 books in the whole history of the genre where an FMC has an abortion.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?
