"While Trump had been going on and on about his renovations project — home-decorating being the one creative impulse he actually has ...."

While he might have the creative impulse, I think many would agree his 'creative' aesthetics are truly abominable.
Fun fact about him: he worked for George Soros for years.
"The premiere of Ontario seems to have come off the rails a little ...."

Oh, goddess of irony!
Translation: "I can't answer any questions because Trump did this purely out of vindictive spite--he's a three-year-old, after all. He just wants to lash out at Canada for standing up to him, and he wants to see others suffer."
Your point about the value of boarding the vessels to gather intelligence makes perfect sense. Failure to do is what has convinced me that these strikes are not about stopping the flow of drugs but rather about making political statements and seeing how far this admin can go in flaunting the law.
Another outstanding essay by Noel. What I so appreciate about his work are his insights around aesthetics that help us understand the danger that Trump represents.

"Trump is a man who cannot appreciate real beauty or understated elegance because to do so would require both empathy and sensitivity."
Er, and produce what, exactly?
The military is going to play a role in the design and construction?!?!

😵‍💫🤪🙃🥴
I agree but change, if it is possible, is going to take some time. First, the negative economic impacts have to hit hard. That won't happen for at least several months, if not a year or two.

Second, they have to overcome the cognitive dissonance. That is tough, painful psychological work.
What I find so distressing is that so many are totally on board with this desecration. No sense of aesthetics or culture. No sense of history.

A bitter lament indeed.
In short, tearing down America. Tearing down all that actually has made it great.

Totally surreal.
Reports say the new ballroom will be fashioned after the ballroom at Mar-a-Lago.

Oh, dear. Insult piled on top of injury.
it is appalling to witness how, on multiple fronts, this administration is flouting the laws of the land.

One might think that a certain individual wishes to be a law unto himself.
Thank you, Katharine! Very inspiring, especially, as you say, the dedication of younger generations.

"By the 2070s, the region could move 'from one that’s merely inhospitable to one that is actually intolerable' ....”

For the sake of everyone in the region (and all of us), I hope for the best.
"Renderings released by the White House suggest a strong resemblance to the gilded ballroom at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private club and home in Palm Beach, Florida."

Oh, dear.

"Windows will be bulletproof."

Natch.
The tragedy here, to mix history and fiction (with apologies to Rousseau and Dickens), is that when the call goes out "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche," some of the masses will reply "Please, sir, may I have some more?"

it may take them quite some time to realize the answer will be "No, never."
Thanks for re-posting this. RFK Jr.'s ideological take on science is not only incredibly ignorant but also incredibly dangerous.

Lysenkoism comes to America.
Kennedy: "And a lot of it now is coming out of the jet fuel. Those materials are put in jet fuel. I’m going to do everything in my power to stop it."

Total whacko. Absolute bonkers.

You know when someone mentions chemtrails, they've gone completely whacko. This is the HHS Secretary.

<Shudder>
Scholarship itself has no future in the U.S. ... and that will have impacts on scholarship everywhere.
That video of him piloting that jet was truly, truly disturbing. Long gone is the idea of a president serving all Americans, regardless of political affiliation.

And the imagery couldn't have been more graphically telling: a president who literally and figuratively wants to sh!t on the people.
Thanks for sharing. One would hope that such data would provoke this reaction: "Houston, we have a problem."
Yes, 'leans conservative' is putting it mildly for Orange County, so this is a significant shift.
Yes! I think this is a very important point.
I could never have imagined anyone associating 'wisdom' with Trump.

But here we are.
