One thing that helps me a lot is thinking of my mind as a camera with a lens that can zoom WAY in or WAY out. Whenever you find yourself paralyzed by useless stress, zooming out toward the cosmic or in toward the infinitely moment-mindful is both healthy and wise.

It's ALL reality.

I’m not kidding when I say I love a formal synthesis. This one is spot-on. Some of what’s happening is people are trying to have a historical gaze for events that are still happening. Is it definitionally authoritarian? Cannot know until bodies stop dropping. But you can know it feels authoritarian
Thesis: Trump is ticking off his authoritarian to do list quickly
Antithesis: While Trump is *trying* to tick off his authoritarian to do list, he's not fully succeeding

Synthesis: Each item on this check list is not a binary but a spectrum, and we're *way* too far down the spectrum for any comfort
I find this @donmoyn.bsky.social piece helpful in clarifying why I disagree with the "America is already in competitive authoritarianism" thesis.

Don's checklist shows things that Trump has tried to do, but he hasn't *succeeded* in most areas

This is and will be the existential question of this time…How are we (Americans) losing to cruelty, stupidity, ineptness?…
"These aren’t just your usual, run-of-the-mill GOP tax cuts. They’re worse. They’re the most redistributive tax cuts in modern American history, and by redistributive, I don’t mean from the top down. I mean to the top from the rest of us." https://trib.al/sSKvoHg
How Can the Democrats Be Losing to These Cruel, Stupid, Inept People?
You may have noticed: While Republicans debate Medicaid and other cuts, there’s one aspect of Trump’s big ugly bill that absolutely cannot be discussed.

There’s just so much shady shit in this story, but this really sticks out. Folks in NLRB’s IT unit were so freaked out by what they saw DOGE doing that they wanted to notify the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Then this happened:

I think we have to confront the fact that tens of millions of Americans have pledged slavish allegiance to a man who says explicitly that his benchmark for when America was great is 1913. And then we have to think about the possibility that we are in the throes of a nationwide mental health crisis.

Public progress and private prejudice.

This conversation reminds me of Randall Kennedy’s critique — In our personal spheres we feel entitled to act on preference which often exposes the very racism/classism/elitism we claim to oppose publicly.

This is tragic. Anyone who was familiar with 18F knows those were some of the real heroes of government, who helped make government tech/digital services better for the public.

They were doing real work that DOGE pretends to do, but is too ignorant to know how to do.
18F, a digital services unit inside the General Services Administration, has been completely laid off, according to an email I’ve seen. The email says that 18F was deemed “non-critical” and the decision was made with the “explicit” direction of the administration and GSA leadership.

Many people used to like to say that “Twitter isn’t real life,” but now we have a federal government influenced in large part by people who spent the last decade as Twitter trolls.

A few of us tried to warn that the online ops happening in plain sight needed to be taken far more seriously.
