Shirome (2010)
 Yet another Shiraishi mockumentary, this time the premise is a young idol group goes to a haunted site to make a wish to perform on a big stage, filmed for promo etc. The contrast is so good, esp when they’re doing their little cutesy song & dance in the darkness of the haunted room. The actresses were/are an actual idol group, & it turns out they were told this was for a real documentary. Their horrified reactions are genuine. This one was a ton of fun. I love Shiraishi’s style.

Daguerreotype (2016) - French and Japanese collaboration
 I expected horror, but it was really just a dark drama romance. It sets up really fantastic unsettlingly imagery with the daguerreotype process and physicality and devices and chemicals and long posing etc, but all that becomes irrelevant in the back half. Wish it had been tied more deeply to the story and had gone in a full horror direction. Wasn’t terrible, but felt like wasted potential.

This one was also really hard to track down. Ultimately could only find it on hoopla via my library card, and had to “””rent””” it (digital) within a certain window before my library’s *collective* allotted “””rentals””” were used up for the day…. Okay lol.

Broadcast Signal Intrusion (2021)
 Went through the whole movie mildly disliking stuff about it, but while discussing afterwards I realized it was all intentional. You watch the protag go through this descent into mad conspiracy, but by the end you realize it’s infected you too. All the theories you formed along the way about what was really going on is just your version of the same descent. Truly a unique film… more disorienting by design than entertaining (tho it was generally that too)

Pontypool (2008)
 …one of the strangest horror movies I’ve seen. 1st half had an *amazing* setup & ramping up of tension: small town radio crew tries to understand & report on The Horrors as they hear about it from reporters & witnesses. But the 2nd half, once it reveals what The Horrors are, just completely falls apart. Strange premise poorly explained. The characters built up in 1st half feel like totally different characters in 2nd half. Confusing & baffling movie moreso than outright bad.

Underworld (2003)
 Cringey and edgy but in a way that felt like they didn’t really believe in it, like no one was actually having fun. A full hour longer than I wish it was. For all the big bad moves they gave the main girl, it was always in service of dad or boy crush. Poorly-choreographed action. Audio mixing was atrocious, either blaring loud action or the quietest whispering I had to nearly max out the volume to hear. The best moment was random James Hurley actor jumpscare.

The Vourdalak (2023)
 Ooooh really interesting! Folk horror, kind of like a really dark fairytale vibe. 18th century, somewhere in what felt like Eastern Europe. A lost French noble has A Bad Time in a way that was very entertaining but also deeply unsettling. Fantastic atmosphere. Interesting framing of love as a curse… Really dug this one.

Talk to the Dead (2013)
 More coherent storyline than The Crone, but… I found it kinda dull. A very 2010’s premise, an app that lets you [title]. For the most part, each little storyline went in similar directions and all wrapped up pretty much the same way.

The Crone / Kosoku Baba (2013) 
Half mockumentary, half normal film. It… was pretty bad. Unclear motivations for basically everything. Just kinda felt like an excuse to do creepy scenes and budget body horror. Clumsy acting and directing. Yeah this ain’t it.

Cult and the next 2 films seem to have been made in parallel as a sort of “game jam” style challenge? They don’t seem to connect, but interesting.

Cult (2013, Shiraishi)
 Another exorcism mockumentary from Shiraishi. Very similar vibes his other stuff I’ve seen, especially Noroi (2009) which I love. The last third of this one got way more anime than I expected. It was a very goofy (unintentionally?) and budget, but the vibes were just so good.

Sinners (2025)

Very very good for the most part, but there’s a certain way some vampire movies go, which this did, that I generally feel deflates the psychological tension. Sinners got a little cornier than I like sometimes, but overall real good.

Nosferatu (2024)

This was sick. Very glad we saw the 1931 Dracula's just last month too because there were several moments that were direct references to those films. Extremely fun

tons of bugfixes, some QoL, minor balance tweaks. biggest things are fixing pause menu bugs related to gamepads, and a new setting to boost the brightness of the PUR background (iykyk)

A Kasa-Obake and Chochin Obake hang out near the top left and right, with assorted creatures from top to bottom: A Tengu looking at a Baku, Sunamura no Onryo looking at Pumpkitty, Amabie walking along, Kappa holding a lantern, Hitotsune-Kozo calling others into his shop, a Nekomata mother walking with her child, and Ina the O-Inari talking to a ghost bookseller.
