Just to be clear, an English degree - learning to critically assess texts - is actually one of the most dangerous for people such as Badenoch.

An educated population, able to bring hundreds of years of context to statements in a dawning age of AI slop and attention-seeking dishonesty is also vital.

So, the plan is to cut English, the arts, and sociology - the degrees that actually study culture - while on another part of your platform claiming to “defend” British culture.

It’s performance nationalism with a reading age of seven.
Badenoch: Curb students taking 'rip-off' degrees such as English
The performing arts, sociology and anthropology are among the subjects the Conservatives would like to cut

Gathering insights from stakeholders and those who have undertaking VATSU renovations, the research aimed not only to document the barriers but also identify how a coordinated approach could scale up the response.

VATSUs present a challenge because they are difficult to count and pose unique barriers to reuse. Nevertheless, are a significant untapped housing resource. www.dubsimon.ie/wp-content/u...

3. We need coordinated responses to specific barriers: The final report, led by Dr Kathleen Stokes in partnership with Michelle Connolly of Dublin Simon Community, builds on these insights to focus specifically on the question of vacant above shop units (VATSUs).
ciantocallaghan.bsky.social
It uses interviews with stakeholders to identify barriers to bringing vacant housing back into use. Our analysis shows that barriers often overlap several areas of concern.

2. How we respond to vacancy matters: Our 2nd report outlines recent political and policy responses to urban vacancy in Ireland. It focuses on how different forms of vacancy are produced within the dominant planning and development system. doi.org/10.25546/103...

One of the key outputs from this was the development of a provisional typology of vacancy in Dublin. This was designed to get away from seeing vacancy as a singular number and instead relating to several urban policy challenges.

1.Measurements of vacancy matters: Housing vacancy is known through datasets. However, what is captured by different forms of measurement is not straightforward. Our report clarifies what different datasets measure and how these align (or not) with policy. hdl.handle.net/2262/95290

The final report was funded by the Housing Agency and focused on the challenge of vacant over the shop units (VATSUs).
ciantocallaghan.bsky.social
The first two reports were produced through the Rethinking Urban Vacancy project, funded by Research Ireland. The aim was to better understand how housing vacancy was measured, produced and responded to in the Irish context, focusing on three cities: Dublin, Waterford and Cork.

Housing vacancy has become a growing area of research and policy concern, and a lot of work has been done in getting under the hood of what appears a simple problem on the surface.

This clip has been circulating a lot and look I don't want to be critical, it's great that it's inspiring people.

BUT. There is one thing he says that's inaccurate and it's important that people understand the reality.

He says that their trade union didn't support them. That's not true.

The story of how Ireland became the first western nation to implement a nationwide ban on South African goods during the apartheid era beautifully told. This cheered me up immensely.

There are spontaneous protests throughout Italy for Gaza happening right now. This is in addition to calls for a general strike this Friday by the country's largest union (see above in thread)

Was with the families and friends of the Irish participants of the #GlobalSumudFlotilla earlier. It was great. They are great.
But one line was 🔥
“You raise your child to believe that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. And then they go on a flotilla to Gaza. I mean!”

The police & the prosecutors were more like students with an essay crisis, than custodians of the public interest. This was Keystone Cops stuff.

Irish and European governments have the obligation to ensure that the volunteers on the flotilla are protected under international law from these illegal actions by Israel

BREAKING: The Gaza-bound aid flotilla says it has “credible intelligence” that “Israel is likely to escalate violent attacks on the flotilla within the next 48 hours,” possibly using weapons that could scuttle boats or cause fatalities.

Our friend, poet and activist Sarah Clancy, is on the Spectre, one of the boats on the Flotilla which was attacked last night. Contact the Taoiseach and Tánaiste to demand protection, there must be safe passage for all trying to break apartheid Israel's illegal siege of Gaza. #LiftTheSiege
