I'm aware that many local polticians endorsed him, I'm not denying that, but I'm also pointing out that other major parts of the party actively worked against him, a problem Frey did not have, and still in the course of a year he went from an unknown to the biggest vote getter in half a century.

Tens of millions of SuperPAC dollars, from Dem and Republican donors both, were thrown against Mamdani. Sure, Frey and Mamdani both won races, but the incline on Mamdani's was far steeper.

Both local senators refused to endorse him, and instead spread lies about him being antisemitic. The Speaker of the House, a congressman from the city, early on did similar, only endorsing Mamdani in a muted way at the last hour. His opponent was a former governor and endorsed by a former president.

1. This morning, California Governor said he was in "complete alignment" with anti-LGBTQ+ hate-influencer Charlie Kirk of TPUSA on transgender sports.

He also conceded on trans inmates and gender affirming care for youth.

It's so much worse than being reported.

The Times parsed the vote using similar categories and again found that the single most determinative factor economic-like factor in the election was "commute by transit" vs "commute by car." It edged out renters vs. homeowners. There's still outstanding data but I expect these trends will hold.
