Thomas looked at the ceiling. “Yes, Dad,” Thomas said. “I was doing magic so that the compound doesn’t get overrun by wicked fairies. That’s my job.”

He read the moment of transition and rolled his eyes. “Jesus fucking Christ. Every goddamn time I think it’s gonna change, that you’re gonna see the fucking light.” Penny crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow and said in the coldest voice she could muster, “And what light is that? Yours?” He opened his mouth. Closed it again. Looked away. “You go to work every day with people who want to kill me. Not metaphorically. They want to erase me and everyone like me from the planet, and they are working hard to that end. This isn’t a war you can play both sides of, Penny. You’re not an idiot. You’re a hell of a lot smarter than me, and it’s infuriating that you keep up this stupid goddamn charade.”

Her voice reverberated around the wide room, making people stop and glare at her. Trix shrank, but Kimmy just beamed at them and shrugged. She wasn’t going to feel bad for pointing out the truth. Gradually the over-loud murmur of a few dozen people in an echoing space returned, which seemed to embolden Trix to lean over and whisper to Kimmy. “So has no one figured out a noise dampening spell?” They asked. “Or, like, thought to hang some tapestries if they wanna keep up the old money, Renaissance vibe?”

Look,” the guy said. He’d told Thomas to call him ‘John.’ His name almost certainly wasn’t John. “Whatever’s going on in there, it stinks. It’s fucked up and weird. They’re messing with people’s minds, man! All this shit they have us sign…” The man shook his head, eyes scrunched shut as if he were warding off some internal pain. “It’s bad.” Thomas handed him a whiskey. “You said in your message that you’d worked there for years. What’s got you freaked out now?” The man reached into his coat and produced a large vial of dark red liquid. Thomas tried and failed to control his facial expression. The aura of power he’d felt earlier hadn’t belonged to the man, it was this thing just existing.

It was a dense old alchemical treatise called Alternatives To Philosophy and contained a number of spells and recipes for elixirs of eternal life, none of which worked, and a few spells for summoning entities from beyond the mortal plane of existence, several of which did. “Why did you choose this book?” “There’s a summoning back there for a psychopomp, a death-guide,” Kimmy said. “Moving human souls around is kind of their job, right?”

It wasn’t the kind of place he’d expect from Serena. The broken window aside, the waiting room was dingy. The mildew smell of wet laundry left overnight in the washing machine lingered in the faded, blue carpet and the set of uncomfortable plastic chairs. There were magazines in a rack, all from the early 2010s. Nobody came here. Nobody cared what happened here. Except someone obviously did. There was a security camera above the desk, a little black bump on the ceiling, watching the door. The red, blinking light was just visible through the glass housing. The oldest blood drinking vampires might not show up on tape, but Sebastian sure did. He’d have to steal the camera footage too.

Serena knew. Or at least she suspected. The heels and the dress prevented him from moving faster than a saunter. It gave him time to think through his next steps at least. It wasn’t just that Serena suspected, it was that she suspected and she was confident enough in her suspicions to reveal them to Sebastian. It was possible he was being paranoid. Serena took to subtlety the way ducks took to crude oil. But it wouldn’t hurt to throw some chaff in her direction, something to muddy the waters and throw any Entente snoopers off the scent.

The dragon dreams, fitful and sweating. Her child screams somewhere in the labyrinthine aerie. Not the usual cries of play or outrage, but the high-pitched, desperate screams of a child in pain. She feels that pain as if it is her own. It is her own. His terror is her own as it was when this wasn’t a dream. The spine-shattering sensation of her child in danger lives in her bones now, always recallable. She must race to him, did race to him, she races to him. What thoughts form in her adrenaline-poisoned brain feel like a distant recounting of facts: Someone attacked. Someone is killing her family. Her baby is in danger. Her unnamed baby. Her child has no name, they can’t die without a name, it would be a true death to die without a name.
