I study high-impact weather, help develop high-resolution models to improve weather forecasts, and mentor scientists. Constantly striving to help those around me flourish. My views expressed here are mine alone.

None of NOAA’s line offices work in isolation. At GSL, we’re proud to engage with our NWS colleagues on testing and evaluating the modeling system and service innovations — which we then use to make them better before reaching operations! Here’s how we’re doing so now:

If you gave me one guess as to which city this combination of hospitality and sentimentality took place, it would’ve been Milwaukee. There’s no place like it, in all of the good ways. Enjoy this heart-warming story.
R.E.M. and Bill Berry fans, this is so wholesome.

As to those “others [that] are being explored” — HRRRCast v2 is just about ready to go, with more variables and levels in the training (and thus the output), to be followed quickly by v3, a true 3-km AI model. More soon!
The @nws.noaa.gov ventures into AI weather models, with data now available for those who wish to utilize and/or assess. Others are being explored (h/t @clarkevanswx.bsky.social) as well!

This was a lot of fun to watch earlier this morning while working. I may not live in Grafton or Wisconsin any longer, but I was stoked to watch them pull this out. Go Black Hawks!
Graysen Bollech, YOU are now immortal in Grafton. Black Hawks win first state title since 1982 with Division 3 triumph.

Hurricane Melissa produced the fastest hurricane winds to be recorded by a dropsonde, verified by reviewing data at NSF NCAR! Hurricane Melissa’s 252 mph wind gust surpassed the previous record from Typhoon Megi over the Western Pacific in 2010, where a dropsonde measured wind gusts of 248 mph.

Really good story from
@mattbakercfb.bsky.social on college football following the business trend of pricing out middle-class fans. Not just FSU, but everywhere.

There is a real risk here of alienating the next generation of fans for the sake of money today.

With few exceptions, the key to understanding university administrative thinking is casting aside premonitions of quality or essentiality to mission or even influences to downstream programs and solely focusing on numbers of enrolled students in that specific program.
I was chatting with a friend earlier this week about the stability of atmospheric science academic programs. We agreed that the number of "safe" programs is somewhere between 5-10. For better or worse, we're a niche field, and college admins love big programs and don't care much about quality. (1/3)

its difficult to hire.
like those cooking shows where the judges say: “its overcooked by 8 secs”, “too much salt”, “this is overpowering” & they proceed to lick the plate clean. b/c the competition is fierce. each candidate has a diff fit. diff expertise. tailor your resume.

Very disheartened by the UNL chancellor's decision to recommend the Earth & Atmospheric Sciences Department for elimination, despite the opposition from the Academic Planning Committee's vote.

Both the opposing and in favor summary noted the value EAS provides to the discipline, and both sides

Disappointing news out of Nebraska, where the University's Chancellor's Final Budget Reduction Plan continues to call for eliminating the Dept of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences - notably, against the recommendation of the university's Academic Planning Committee.
