For @teenvogue.com, I wrote about RFK's desire to send people to 'wellness farms'--and how the US has already tried that.

A big thank you to @allegrak.bsky.social for believing in this piece!
RFK Wants to Send People to ‘Wellness Farms.’ The US Already Tried That.
RFK said Americans “addicted” to opioids, antidepressants, and stimulants should be sent to “wellness farms."

Not to be a wide-eyed naïf about such things but... am I right in thinking that they levelled an entire building to get to one guy and *that* is not controversial to anyone in the American media or political class, only that this information was recklessly shared in an unsecured chat?

again, compare jurors and grand jurors, every day people, who stood up to death threats and were not cowed in the least, with prosecutors, many judges, and politicians, who mostly dilly dallied and hoped trump would go away on his own or folded entirely.
how cowardly our *elites* have become. it's very, very depressing how few people have left biglaw in a blaze of glory like Rachel Cohen post-Paul Weiss.

It’s truly plain as day.
The massive investment in AI (something most consumers do not want and will not pay for) only makes sense when you see it as a way to undercut tech workers’ market power
Anyway, they’re all playing in your face about AI. As soon as it deprofessionalizes everybody that the market hates because their credentials give them wage power, you’ll be able to buy a LLM tamagotchi at the Family Dollar and we will all vaguely remember when these toys were a fix for everything

How great is it that I got to destroy a forest in order to get this INCORRECT AI-powered answer??? (Netflix has 26 Oscars.)

Canada needs: strict regulations on housing, food supply, energy, environment. We need a national housing and alternate energy plan. We need massive capital transportation projects. We need broad national dental, pharma, and child-care, no opts-outs allowed. We need a strong social safety net.

EARTHWORMS ARE INVASIVE SPECIES IN CANADA!
What’s something that’s a banal observation in your field, but which really blows students’ minds the 1st time they encounter it?

I’ll go 1st—when we talk about how technological history gets narrated & I say "no human being has ever lived in a historical period—they’ve only lived in the present"

I read a lot. Part of the appeal is that the act of reading connects me - across space and time - with another human being who created something with intentionality. I don't want to read things written by computers. It defeats the purpose entirely.

Grading short quizzes when you're used to grading 2000+ word essays is such a breath of fresh air. I don't even like quizzes, but this is undeniably a benefit...

Books designed to be read only by human eyes are different from books designed to be read by machines, which is why Google will tell you that the phrase “shake my booty” can be found in an 1863 English translation of Don Quixote.

I’ve been thinking for a while that it’s becoming politically untenable for many “international” academic associations to be US-based. Here is yet another reason why - many people literally cannot travel to the US for conferences, which we are supposed to do for our careers.
THEY'RE GOING TO ISSUE PERMANENT VISA BANS TO TRANS VISITORS TO THE US.

This isn't just for athletes. The directive as stated applies to all visa applications made by trans folks and declare it material fraud to use a different gender marker on applications.

It is shameful that RAINN, representing sexually abused people, erased trans people because they are scared of Trump.

To any org censoring themselves: you cannot jettison trans to save yourself. Yes, if you don't, other groups may suffer, and you might too.

But we are all in this together.

Today, we at Google have a new product: what if you could could ask an app a question? Oh, we do that already? Well, what if we were a little bit worse at it? What if we also sometimes gave you egregiously wrong information? And what if it cost a billion dollars? Still not interested? It's mandatory
