Normalize getting gifts "wrong."

I've had terrible gifts, even offensive ones (!!)
I may've avoided a few 'off' gifters, but I haven't cut anyone out of my life for it. And tbh some misfires have turned into hilarious shared memories.
I'd rather make a joyful mistake than hit soulless perfection.

My freshman year of college, I kept seeing ads for a caramel apple cheesecake pie at Marie Callender's and telling everyone how amazing it looked. On my birthday, my roommates surprised me by taking me to get the pie. Caramel. Apple. Cheesecake. Pie. It was magical.
We need some sweetness, so please regale me with a description of the best pie you've ever had 🥺

Here's a picture of a lemon pie I once made with salted meringue. It was not the best pie I ever had but it was delicious

It’s maybe not the best pie but it was very good pie. Creamy lemon meringue pie and the lemon wasn’t overbearing. In a garden behind an Amsterdam museum/gallery. A cat jumped up on the table to say hi. Perfection. 10/10 no notes

SECOND CHANCE ROMANCE is warm, cozy, & out today. I hope you love it! 💗

The story: A cranky baker's erroneous obituary brings the woman who got away back into his life--& now he needs to convince her to stay.
The heat level: steamy!
The baked goods: plentiful!

When 19 was 13 (I think?), they asked for chocolate cream pie for their bday. Being me, I tweaked the recipe I found in a 2000-era cookbook (gift). So: peanut butter-oreo crust; custard from a mix of semi- & dark chocolate, homemade whipped cream obvs. It eats, every year. Silky, rich, crunchy. Yum.

The more I think about this, the more it really, really, REALLY bothers me

We've reached a point where a text-based reference fabrication engine - comfortably the most effective machine liar we've ever invented - is being pushed by an ultra-polluting tech company and accepted by climate scientists
Deeply absurd. This Google PDF published on a blog (arxiv, not peer reviewed) claims an LLM is "PhD level" but in most cases the MAJORITY of reference URLs were invalid or inaccessible.

A PhD sitting down and just fabricating >50% of sources = career ending

So thrilled to see ALTER EGO out in paperback today!

Eternally proud of this standalone sequel to SECRET IDENTITY, which was an immediate USA TODAY-bestseller, Anthony Award-nominee, and got rave reviews from all over.

Not that this is going to get the traction of an entire government entity posting through it yesterday but Rad Power Bikes released a statement about yesterday’s warning here. press.radpowerbikes.com/258269-rad-p...
Rad Power Bikes' Response to CPSC Safety Statement
Rad Power Bikes firmly stands behind our batteries and our reputation as leaders in the ebike industry, and strongly disagrees with the CPSC's characterization of certain Rad batteries as defective or...

The upshot is that they fully cooperated with an investigation that found that their batteries are perfectly safe - findings which the government *did not dispute*, but the CPSC decided to issue a warning anyway because this admin thinks electric bikes are for sissies or whatever the fuck

I think it’s time to put this one back out into the ether, friends

Come and learn about how the tropes undergirding anti-Jewish hatred and conspiracy theories as they exist today came to be…
The Antisemitism Post (tm)
Gotta get the history to know where the tropes live in the discourse today.

A note to say @blackamazon.bsky.social and her colleagues warned about this sort of thing many years ago.
"The only thing revealed by this transparency is that social media companies do not give a f*ck about this."

Our attention is the product

There are tutorials in many languages on how to exploit that for profit, not just to stir the pot

AI makes it so easy to exploit now and everyone wins but you

Gentle reminder for those using regular degular browsers: you can get non-slopified google search results by adding “-ai” (after a space) to your query. It still works for me; I use Safari
NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

Viola Fletcher, the oldest living survivor of the 1921 Tulsa race massacre, has died. She was 111.

"I have lived through the massacre every day. Our country may forget this history, but I cannot," she told Congress in 2021.

Geoff Bennett has more.
