You only say that because you believe all/most of the indigenous people are dead, and that no one will ever be able to enforce the broken treaties they made with the United States, because the US is so powerful and that “might makes right.” The day is coming when the US will be subject to courts.
They are so obsessed with the traditional mass because they are obsessed with the idea of only the priest and a select lower few getting to understand and participate. It’s ALL about hierarchy and power, nothing else matters.
Well, read the latest apostolic exhortation by Pope Leo - it just came out on Thursday - “Dilexi Te.” Google it. Apostolic exhortations are basically official “position papers” on what Catholics should be doing.
“Troo Chrastians” have been dreaming of this era for 40 years or more. This is the culmination of everything that the religious right has worked for since Reagan and before. They are ecstatically rolling around in excrement and believing it to be finest chocolate. I’m sure they hardly notice Leo.
The church that I grew up attending, is now unrecognizable to me. They say the words of the mass but if you cut out that part, the entire culture is indistinguishable from the typical suburban/exurban MAGA type “worship club.” I’m half expecting them to start cowboy services - and I’m in NYS.
The priest’s statement framed this as a test, almost like an exorcism (without that overt language). If you are Catholic and you truly believe the host is the actual presence of Christ, nothing more need be said: evil is at work here. So yes, any committed Catholics in ICE ranks should tremble.
However, unlikely. Leo has gone pretty far in making statements to the effect of telling American bishops (as a group) to “get out there and protect migrants.” It’s the job of American bishops to stand as a group against the American government. He has to stand above particular political conflicts.
In one short statement, this priest summed it all up: 1) Pointed directly at ICE/HS (as opposed to local authorities). 2) Called them out as cowards. 3) Called them out as lawbreakers. 4) Called them out as evil. Basically called them out thoroughly on social, legal and moral grounds. Mic drop.
Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”
Some people have been calling this a histrionic gesture, but I don’t think so. It was a committed and practical gesture. They likely knew that even if they were allowed inside, they’d never be able to actually give the Eucharist to all of the prisoners. Bringing it physically in a monstrance…
I didn’t understand why my local Sinclair owned station (not in Chicago) ran a story that said “Ice Denies Communion to Migrants” until I later saw the nature of the procession. Hoo boy. (I’m in the Northeast so, Catholicism is still a thing here)
