Librarian here to chat books, libraries, education, civic literacy, and lots of other, sillier stuff ✨
2 months after I posted this, I tendered my resignation. Taking some time now to think bout what’s next for me… Would love to connect with public librarians who have left the field or found remote work!

#skybrarians 📚 #burnout
It’s been 4 months since I returned to library work full time, & the overwhelm has set in…
I’ve been actively trying not to overextend, set boundaries, avoid burnout, all the things. Not sure if it’s issues at the library I’m in, or if this is truly just part of the profession. 😞

If you think this can’t happen, remember that of the 125,000 Japanese Americans who were interned during WWII for years without charge or trial, two-thirds were U.S. citizens. Including me.

This is debt weaponized to keep public servants in line.
Trump signs executive action targeting public service loan program
The program forgives the loans of borrowers who work in public service. The executive action would exclude those who work for certain organizations.

Echoing this. Avoiding the Meta platforms alone has done wonders for my day-to-day mental health.
I’ve been logging off but not tuning out, consuming news at a clip conducive to mental well-being. I’m enraged and engaged, horrified by the astonishing levels of stupidity, incompetence, and racism.

Water main burst on our street last night and couldn’t sleep through the road being torn up.

Made a huge pot of coffee this AM but in the chaos forgot to pour myself any (mom life).

Made a rare stop at my corner coffee shop and found the CUTEST COFFEE SLEEVES I’VE EVER SEEN 🥹 #kindnessmatters

a pox on the houses of everyone, in the UK, the US or elsewhere who, despite not seeing themselves as reactionaries, decided that trans kids were somehow the most important issue in the world at a time when so much else was going on, and who got their wishes now, but at what cost
Donald Trump has just released a national under 18 trans care ban executive order. I am working through specifically how it tries to do this, and will live tweet here section by section as I read through it.

It is not yet on the website, but has been released via press release.

"TikTok became a major driver of print sales, since influencers want physical objects to display in videos and on their shelves. It converted younger and reluctant readers into heavy book buyers and obsessive fans. And in some ways, it democratized book marketing..."

With a ban looming, publishers are hoping to pivot to new platforms, but readers fear their community of book lovers will never be the same.

This is the word I’ve been looking for. So sick of rage bait. I regret that Meta has become so enmeshed in some of my interpersonal relationships.
Angertainment is a great way to describe the emotional experience most social media platforms are optimizing for.

Can we talk dynamic shelving? Shelf chunking & stacking. Bc I’m gonna be honest, I have a visceral reaction to it & it’s not a good one 😅

I am pro creative signage, face out displays & table displays. (Before my MLIS I spent 8 yrs in merchandising for a large book company)

Voucher supporters say “no one can force your kids to go to public schools” but they either A) fail to realize there’s no obligation for private schools to accept children with disabilities, LGBTQ+, minorities or B) they simply don’t care bc their kids don’t fall into any of those categories (yet)
I've been telling you dismantling public school education is their plan. Perhaps a few decent Republicans remain in Congress and still care to save it.

I want to poll the #Skybrarian think tank: best tips for getting started at a new library in a new community? 💭
After moving to a new area 6 months ago, I’m starting my new YA/Outreach librarian position on Monday! First priority for me is observation, getting to know our staff & community 📚

I worked for a chain book store for 8 yrs during/after my English Lit undergrad, promoted to management for the last several years. Realized that I wanted a book-focused career but minus the retail management and with more opportunities for community building…and that’s a library :D

Many of us are skeeting Librarian origin stories today. Here's mine. #Skybrarians #AcademicSky 📚📜
When I graduated from Undergrad, I was certified to teach Secondary Ed. German. Positions in that language were few, and I enjoyed my student assistant positions in Circ and ILL, so I started applying to libraries. And have been there ever since (MLS obtained 8 years in). #EduLib #Skybrarians 📚
