Beyond Sunset represents a collaborative effort from too many people to name in a single post. It began as a solo project in 2015. Today, it's a first person shooter made with love by a bunch of extraordinarily talented people. #indiedev

I'm aware this is a older post but usual suspects appeared with my recent gamedev progress posts...Might as well start downing a shot each time one of these accounts reacts to you post.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I hate that the dead Internet theory is becoming a reality...

From a gameplay perspective, the player starts with one of the upgraded variants and they collect the faulty model as a resource for the Alt fire from fallen enemies. The upgrade mechanic for weapons has the second pistol replaced with another of the starter pistol removing the resource mechanic.
codestew.itch.io
In-game, there's 2 versions of the pistol. Lower tier enemies get access to a model that has a glaring design flaw that is prone to overheating & exploding when fired too quickly where as Higher tier enemies have access to a improved model that fixes the flaw.
codestew.itch.io
For context in regards to the DMC reference, Dante kept breaking his basic Handguns because he fired them too quickly which eventually led to the creation of Ebony & Ivory.
Decided to make that a mechanic where it's both a resource and fun bit of Lore.
Upgraded Variant gives you Ivory essentially.
codestew.itch.io
Took a while but finally thought of a Alt Fire for the pistols.
A mix of Unreal & Devil May Cry. While you have Ebony, you don't get access to Ivory straight away so find a replacement pistol ASAP until then. Player arms TODO at some point.

re: generative AI

I have finally fully and accurately explained my problem with how it’s marketed and used.

And now, you can use it, too.
Generative Al is being marketed as a tool designed to reduce or eliminate the need for developed, cognitive skillsets. It uses the work of others to simulate human output, except that it lacks grasp of nuance, contains grievous errors, and ultimately serves the goal of human beings being neurologically weaker due to the promise of the machine being better equipped than the humans using it would ever exert the effort to be.

The people that use generative Al for art have no interest in being an artist; they simply want product to consume and forget about when the next piece of product goes by their eyes. The people that use generative Al to make music have no interest in being a musician; they simply want a machine to make them something to listen to until they get bored and want the machine to make some other disposable slop for them to pass the time with.

The people that use generative Al to write things for them have no interest in writing. The people that use generative Al to find factoids have no interest in actual facts. The people that use generative Al to socialize have no interest in actual socialization.

In every case, they've handed over the cognitive load of developing a necessary, creative human skillset to a machine that promises to ease the sweat equity cost of struggle. Using generative Al is like asking a machine to lift weights on your behalf and then calling yourself a bodybuilder when it's done with the reps. You build nothing in terms of muscle, you are not stronger, you are not faster, you are not in better shape.

You're just deluding yourself while experiencing a slow decline due to self-inflicted atrophy.

More Examples. Desperately need to replace the placeholder player model and animations.

That said, these screenshots here have convinced me to add it as a feature down the line.

Wanted a way to take more interesting Screenshots so implemented a basic Photo Mode of sorts. More of a tool than a feature but I'll see how I feel later on if I want to add more features.

I kid you not, my work knows that I do drawing on the side and someone in the office told me AI could save me time and my response was "but I like drawing" and it broke them. They didn't know how to answer, they just couldn't comprehend that people make art because they like making art.

The only viable use cases of AI - even at today's massively subsidized price points - are to scale up scams, grifts, cheating, plagiarism, and carelessness.

Which makes sense - 80% of everything is shit, which includes training data. AI is trained on slop, so it makes (lower resolution) slop.

And, yeah, all of these issues are inherent in how we mismanage software development already. What Large Language Models are doing is magnify the flaws in our already inadequate approach to making software
