Do you think that's where a lot of it comes from, from people who were disinterested and seeing it absolutely stomp everything else at the Game Awards? I remember seeing some Ball and Gun gamers losing their mind over BG3 cause it was turned based. Some of them played it though after and liked it.
My takeaway from the game awards this year was that E33 exists on a pedestal, a pedestal it can never hope to uphold. When it wins every category in a year with some of my personal favorite games of all time I go into the game expecting it to eclipse those other games which will ruin the experience.
