Galadriel’s learning some new tricks.

Ironically I’ve been reading a lot of a revelations lately as I chug along on these last two chapters of meet me at the edge.

Galadriel reins in her mare a few miles shy of the farm. Raising a hand to shield her eyes, she watches as the house and barn dance against the horizon, shimmering like a mirage in the stifling heat. She wonders what kind of welcome she'll find back on the Noldor homestead now that she has the preacher in tow? From her mother and the twins? From Halbrand?

A few minutes later Celeborn draws up alongside her. He's kept pace better than Galadriel anticipated, but the frantic ride from town has left both man and horse worse for the wear. Wordlessly she passes him the canteen Halbrand had packed for her that morning.

"Thank you," Celeborn says, still panting for breath after gulping down the last of the water. He hands her back the empty canteen. "You ride like the devil's on your tail." A harsh, bark of laughter bursts from her unexpectedly. Celeborn tries to join, but his chuckle is awkward and uneasy. "Metaphorically, I mean."

Ëarwen's parting words from the morning come to mind. Come hither, indeed. Without thinking Galadriel continues the verse. "So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns."

"Revelations?"

Galadriel turns to consider the preacher. The blazing afternoon sun has bleached his silver blonde hair of any luster, his face is sweaty and sunburned, he has to squint against the light. He doesn't belong out here.

"Galadriel, please tell me what happened. I want to help, but I can't if I'm in the dark."

"The twins found papa's body out in the fields this morning, after mama sent them to look for him when he didn't show up for breakfast. She came unraveled at the news. Lashed out at us. Aegnor was hurt. Burned, badly I think, though I never got a chance to look at his injuries. Halbrand intervened—"

Celeborn makes a noise of displeasure.

"Father, you weren't there. He probably kept me from doing something I would have regretted." Galadriel pauses. She can feel Celeborn's gaze focused upon her, his attention wound tightly between her fingers like the string of a cat's cradle. With the slightest tug she could pull him in whatever direction she desires. “My mama, she's… She's not right. Hasn't been right for a while if I'm being honest. But lately she's been saying things… I'm worried she might even be seeing things.”

He frowns. “I don’t think I follow.”

She reaches out to settle her hand over his again, feels his fingers twitch beneath hers. Fixing his gaze with her own, she watches as his eyes slowly relax from their squint, as though the sun has dimmed. “Things that aren’t there, Celeborn.”
