I just got my grocery delivery, ready for the nor'easter!

Apropos of nothing, just because I like to share it, my favorite book review of all time read "Every Craig Schaefer novel is like a John Carpenter movie that Carpenter never made."

At first I wanted to point out Misery (dude gets his ankles smashed with a sledgehammer, light compared to the book), or Let The Right One In (pedophile vampire), but goddamn... THE FOG? What on fucking earth is "cozy" about The Fog? Don't disrespect John Carpenter, my inspiration, like this y'all

Absolutely wild that @commandersterling.bsky.social was ranting this week about how the word"cozy" has become pervasive in video games and I see this at my local library today
Poster at the library's video section advertising "cozy horror" movies; it's a collage of original posters for the films The Fog, Practical Magic, Misery, Werewolves Within, Let the Right One In, Hocus Pocus, Sleepy Hollow (Tim Burton version), Scare Me, and An American Werewolf in London.

Never forget that ChatGPT was trained on thousands of authors' writing without their consent, including mine.

When you ask ChatGPT how to rizz, you're asking Harmony Black how to rizz.

He's evidently forgotten that he pardoned all of those evil car-dealership owning Jimmy-Pesto fuckers and let them off the hook. Big apologies? Motherfucker, you let them out of jail and literally don't remember doing it.

That’s a nice trick, since Biden wasn’t the president on Jan 6.

Fuck that fucker. You are NOT alone, you are adored.

Can confirm the "some of their base have no idea what antifa means" thing, btw, from a convo with a concerned family member.

Me: "It's not an organization. It just means anti-fascist. Anyone who opposes nazis is antifa. If you oppose nazis, and I know you do, YOU are antifa."

He was stunned.

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

It is a title of great honor.

I really enjoyed it except for the "We're being hunted by killers, let's hole up here and have sex" bit. Like goddamn, even as a teenager I was never *that* horny.

In hindsight, "they turned the xenomorph into a xenoMILF" was RIGHT THERE and I deeply regret not seeing it before I had my coffee.

But seriously, I want one of these on my desk.

I am ALL the envious. You're gonna have so much fun with that thing!

Just bc a book contains a protagonist between 10 and 30, especially a female protagnoist, doesn't mean it's YA. Just bc the book is written by a woman (or someone you incorrectly assume is a woman), doesn't make it YA. Just bc a book is fun, written colloquially, or has romance doesn't make it YA.

I wrote. A book. About this. This exact fucking thing. Right here.

In one fell swoop they refer to the protagonist as "he" (yeah, the cast includes Colin and Dalton who are dudes, and bros, but...) and promise to capture crime fiction audiences. You know, for Firebreak, which is totally a gritty crime novel and not, say, dark-academia portal fantasy.

Oh, no. The AI promo-bots have found me.

Email: "A firebreak, the last line of defense before everything burns, that's a uniquely potent metaphor for thriller fiction."

Me: "Aw, shit, here we go."

Oh, have to disagree. We ALL win.

I will never forget an editor's note for my very first novel: "Cliche, and jarringly so. You can do better than this."

Ever since that day, when I catch myself sinking into the rote and easy, I stop and tell myself, "You can do better than this." Doesn't always work, but it works a *lot*.

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.
