Fuck it, how about a little self-promo tonight on the last night of the first amendment.

I'm No Escape. I'm writing a book rn and when I'm not doing that I publish pretty good games criticism and commentary. I've been doing this shit since 2019. #supportindiemedia

I am terrified for the future of this country, but glad that at least we started building @aftermath.site a couple years ago — before shit really hit the fan. we’re beholden to nobody but ourselves. no execs can sacrifice us at the altar of a merger, and no bad faith mobs can get us fired
bencollins.bsky.social
Becoming increasingly clear we’re gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment.

Independent media is the only media we will have that will not be beholden to The State

This means it will not have the same reach, influence, or attention as traditional models developed.

This will like be both very good and extremely difficult to maintain.

You should take a minute (or 7) and watch this absolutely beautiful animated adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart from 1953. Unbelievable.

Another great piece from one of my favorite writers. Hoping to pick up Cronos soon or at least watch a playthrough of it. I don't always agree with Bloober's choices, but I'm willing to give them a chance, and I did enjoy the SH2 remake.

ICYMI: "[T]his preoccupation with individual agency over interdependent, communal agency is pervasive in a popular genre of games that often claims to center the latter: Wholesome or Cozy games."

@phoenixsimms.bsky.social muses on communal care in videogames:
Co-opting Co-op - Unwinnable
The narratives of care that feel the most impactful are happening in game genres that aren’t explicitly labelling themselves as being “wholesome."

really funny to see posts like "dont read old scifi/fantasy its all gross dudes" which not only erases marginalized authors of that period but then theyre like "read these nonproblematic friends of mine instead like tj klune"

It can be all of those things and also be a horror movie.

The reason Sinners is so good is that it’s not a horror movie. It is a film about the Black experience, and the immigrant experience in America. It tells the story of marginalized peoples and uses vampires as allegory to tell that story. It is SO much more than a “vampire movie.”

Happy birthday to Lauren, Joey, and the gem that is Blackwell Unbound! While I love the entire series, Unbound is my favorite installment. Lauren is a tragic and beautifully written character, and I love the inclusion of Joseph Mitchell as an important part of the story.
