February is here, which somehow makes Valentine’s Day feel suddenly very close.

If you’re looking for a thoughtful gift, my chocolate boxes are always a good bet. 🍫
They make a lovely Valentine’s gift, whether it’s for someone else or very deliberately for yourself.

Nigel Farage is going to "save pubs" by cutting 5p off the price of a pint of beer...

The £3 billion cost will be funded by reinstating the two-child benefit limit.

This might be the worst policy anyone has ever come up with.

Nigel Farage announces plans to slash vital benefit to fund 5p cheaper pints
Nigel Farage's party had promised to back scrapping the two-child benefit limit, but now Reform intends to funnel the support to the most vulnerable into slashing prices in pubs

I’m sorry, but this is not just a political scandal. Time to refocus on the horrific mistreatment of women and girls, and the role of these ghouls, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde

The thing is, you didn't have to be Nostradamus to see it. You just had to be independent of the ultra-rich. Unfortunately, the great majority of the media is in the plutocrats' pockets. So the people pointing it out are shunned. In 2009 I tried and tried to get the BBC to pick this up. But ...⛔🤐
1. In 2009 I wrote this. I argued that Peter Mandelson's department “functions as a fifth column within government, working for corporations to undermine democracy and the public interest.”
This thread explains what I saw, and reaches a startling conclusion.🧵

Goodwin literally had a hissy fit when Alan Rusbridger & David Aaronovitch went for dinner after an event they all did together & chose not to ask him. He’s palpably desperate to go to fictional dinner parties that exist only in his warped imagination. Instead he gets to suck lemons with 30p Lee.
You dont win 'em all! Reform's Matt Goodwin in Sunday Times: 'Most .. people criticising me are nerds. The last thing I want is to be at some dinner party table with Nick Robinson & Mary Beard. I'd rather shoot myself in the head'. Hang on, I'm not THAT bad!Nerds sometimes have a (thoughtful!) point.

First disappointment of the year is that I didn’t get a part in a show I wanted. Still waiting to see about another play.
🤞

Or maybe it’s the universes way of telling me to concentrate on something else for a while. (Writing? Reading? Jigsaws? Running?)

2026 is the year we should all start reading books again

Books are lovely. Libraries are wonderful places. Second hand book shops are mysterious and magical. Markets and fairs always contain surprise gems. And there are even cafes in forgotten street corners with excellent coffee and reading nooks

Our portion didn’t see January.
