Come to the Burnished City, home of wild magic, sword-fighting street gangs, bad decisions, worse manners, high society, and one defiant alchemist.

Trilogy begins with NOTORIOUS SORCERER, continues with SHADOW BARON, and ends (in Dec 2024) with REBEL BLADE

The covers of three books by Davinia Evans, labelled "The Burnished City". The covers are for Notorious Sorcerer (with a red-coated figure brandishing flame and surrounded by mysterious squiggles and symbols), Shadow Baron (with a masked woman holding her cards close to her chest) and Rebel Blade (with a woman brandishing sabre and dagger).

My kid, struggling with very crusty bread, just complained about the "bread shell" and honestly I'm never calling it anything else ever again
cupiscent.bsky.social
Actually this is a pretty good rendition! But there are many cultural nuances to fairy bread, and the most visible one here is that it's the wrong sprinkles. Needs to be the tiny round ones. (We call them hundreds and thousands.)

I am so delighted to see fairy bread out there in the world! And yet the fairy bread is WRONG. 🤣 But YAY for the powers of sugar!

OMG fairy bread. I am having such a complex Australian reaction 😂

there have always been people who like to write, and people who like to say they have written, and the latter really love the idea of AI and the former can not understand why you'd let a computer do the fun part.

there’s this weird idea a lot of people seem to have about how all of us writers and artists must secretly want to use AI and are merely resisting temptation for ethical reasons, and like, no, it’s not hard for me to resist drinking the bowl of Piss With Glass In It actually

Love writing in the library because any time I need a name I can just look at the nearest book display and grab one.

Though today I did that, and in fine print below the author's name it says "a new era of Australian storytelling" and I'm like... all by himself??

I struggled for weeks on third-year essay, rage-quit at 2am, changed my topic entirely, read Wild Swans and wrote an essay on it in two days. Got the highest mark of my whole degree.

And then I knew I could do that. You learn when you do. Which is the real part genAI can't help with.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.
wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

I assumed exams were to blame. Fiendish things. I shake my fist at them. Exams then holiday time?
cupiscent.bsky.social
Completely unrelatedly, we missed you at Conflux!
But yes, you clearly need to take leave. HOLIDAY TIME?
cupiscent.bsky.social
That is an amazing assignment. Also, I love your Australia. Like, the shape of the continent is amazing, you've got it so much better than most people draw it, it's just you rotated it 180 degrees and I'm so fascinated by it 😂

So much list solidarity. It is the way.

Arguably what the sport needs. I find your angle compelling, at least 😂

Excited to be off to Canberra tomorrow for Conflux! I'll be talking editing on Saturday afternoon, the path to publication on Monday morning, and probably nonsense in the bar at most other times. 😆🥂 www.conflux.org.au

Honestly, I already feel like everything I do in microsoft office programs, especially the online versions thereof, is only a rough approximation of what I wanted to do, so I'm not sure I'll notice any difference...

Which novella?
And what did you drink to accompany this decadence?
cupiscent.bsky.social
I mean, yes. But also while I love gene kelly I'm imagining the paso-doble father from Strictly Ballroom reaction to this and it's making me giggle a lot.

Hadn't truly appreciated how totally K-pop had become mainstream until my kid got a cartoon-BTS happy meal toy.

Wow. Angry and dismayed yes, and just so tired. Barked a bitter laugh at the housework dig.

Seems like a small market though... 😂
