Day one of the winter games I've spent at home minding a sick child and loving every second of the figure skating pairs. God I love the Olympics, for all its faults.

New Bohs season starts on Sunday. Have missed live football in my life. There's nothing like shouting football advice to someone half your age, fifty yards away, who's more talented than you.

Got a really lovely message from a young person today who was fitted with a pacemaker at the age of 20 and they messaged me to say what my book Pacemaker, which they'd got as a Christmas gift this year, meant to them. Humbling to think my little book about walking and my wonky heart has that effect.

My least favourite genre of NRK article: historically high food prices, but it's up to you start baking your own bread in order to save money:

The problem with this a) not everyone has the time and b) you can't change structural issues alons
Stine sparar 15.000 kroner i året på eitt enkelt grep
Då favorittbrødet til familien nærma seg 60 kroner stykket, tok ernæringsrådgjevar Stine Pedersen Svarthe grep. No bakar ho sjølv og sparar fleire tusen kroner kvart einaste år.

Watched this tonight, on loan from our library, on DVD. I've not been this frustrated by a film in a long time and by the end we were left just baffled. A garbled mess of visuals and while narrative always took a backseat, the last 30mins it just seemed to collapse.

Understanding skiing for me has been relatively easy in that it kind of occupies the same place in Norwegian life that the GAA does in Ireland. It is the national sport and the nation-building sport. Also once ostensibly amateur. And as @bernhardellefsen.bsky.social notes, ideally it's heroes
Getting ready for the winter Olypmics with this excellent examination of skiings place in contemporary Norwegian society, the age of the attention economy and the society of the spectacle.

One of my new years resolutions has been to be more au fait with classic Norwegian writing. There's Ibsen and Hamsun of course, but I'm starting with Amalie Skram and her tetralogy about a family living just outside of Bergen

If you haven't read it by the way, I can strongly recommend the book Perfecting Sound Forever on the history of music recording
On the point about music, people have only had recorded sound available for a little over 100 years and it has already changed format so often, I suppose. We've also listened to it on radio waves so are used to it's lack of physicality alongside physical ownership simultaneously.

I haven't seen anything about what's actually going on with Maduro and his wife now for several days. Are they just in custody? Like, seems crazy to me that there isnt round the clock info on it. There's really just too much happening isnt there?

Dette er farlig og, spør du meg, nesten uansvarlig av statskanalen å drive med normalisering – ja tom hylling av – "side hustles" og dermed en nedvurdering av konseptet av et godt lønn til en trygt, vanlig jobb.

As im powering my through Dag Solstad's novel about his character Bjørn Hansen, I listened to the episode of Klassekampens Solstad podcast, where Karl Ove Knausgård stated that in his view, foreigners couldn't read Solstad. That is that he was so Norwegian that he was kind of beyond translation.

Marvelling at the fact that this year marks a full 20 years since the first poem I had published came out. It was in Jimmy Cummins small magazine Default, and was called "essential beats" and was so important to 18yr old me as a sign that this was something I could keep doing. And I am.
