I wrote about why New York's fictional futures are so often dystopian, from Escaped From New York and Soylent Green to I Am Legend and The Expanse. (Do you buy that they are unlikely love letters to the city? I think I do!) Gift link:

This is genius
If you live in a city with a decent Chinatown and are hosting or attending a potluck Thanksgiving, I highly recommend getting some char siu and chopped roast duck. Always a hit with my friends, not that expensive, and barely any leftovers. Sometimes I pick up egg tarts for dessert.

One of the best, a sordid tale, directed by, of all people, an old-school British dude who also did “The Man in the White Suit.” With the best cinematography by legend James Wong Howe.

NEW: Federal agents busted into an Elmhurst apartment early last Thursday morning and pointed guns at a woman and her four children, according to video and an account from the family.

The agents came looking for a relative who no longer lived in the apartment, the shellshocked mother told THE CITY. Days later, her children are terrified to leave their parents' sides.

This is pretty amazing. This guy just won a solid victory in Bucks County, PA, one of the most important swing counties in the country, by *explicitly and deliberately* making his race *all about* nationalizing ICE raids. Confirms the point about this now being a winning issue for Dems.

This is targeted and purposeful, not a fluke. As the article says, it’s based on a decades-old, long unenforced deportation order.
