Sharing food with strangers, whether it's as an act of reclaiming a colonialist myth, or because anyone knocking on doors at dinner time isn't eating dinner themselves and might be hungry, is a great act of generosity and care, and I wish it happened more often.

Afterwards they'd bustle back out the door, eager to get to the other houses on the street. I can't imagine what they told people about us, but I do remember once when my mom invited someone in, their eyes got a little wide and they said "I'VE HEARD OF THIS HOUSE."

We would ask them as many questions as they could answer between bites. They were always passionate about their causes, and warmed up to the admittedly bizarre situation pretty quickly. This was part of our education, in a strange but very real way.

My parents were (still are) vegetarian, and my mother reasoned that these young activists would be more likely to be able to eat her food. As if anyone else was inviting them in. They would come in, a little nervously, and encounter five fascinated secular homeschooled weirdos of varying ages.

When I was a kid my parents would invite the activists in for a home cooked meal. They would come to the door, all of 18 or whatever, collecting for Clean Air, Clean Water. My father would write them a check and my mother would invite them to dinner. They almost always accepted. (cont'd)

My mom was a chemistry professor and each year would invite all the international students to our house for Thanksgiving dinner. I wrote about that (and what it taught me) here:
The Strangers at Our Thanksgiving Table
They were new to this country, to the holiday, to us. And we made space for them.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Celeste.

Matthew somehow manages to be one of the most solid and consistent characters in comics.

CHALLENGES YOU COULD CRUSH

They've created a need for cheap or unpaid harsh, manual labor. Gosh I wonder what kind of system would fill that void while still maintaining corporate profits.

So this is funny.
The administration just issued a rule slashing foreign agricultural worker wages. And to justify it, in a public filing, Trump's Labor Department alleges that Trump's immigration enforcement has devastated the Ag workforce and caused a "risk of supply shock-induced food shortages."
Trump Labor Department Says His Immigration Raids Are Causing a Food Crisis
In a filing in the Federal Register, the Labor Department argues there are “immediate dangers to the American food supply” due to a lack of migrant agricultural workers.

Protect the land that inspired this page.
A page from Kate Beaton’s “Ducks”. Five panels, in panel 1 we see Kate’s feet on the beach at the edge of the water. In panel 2 we see a wave wash over her feet. In Panel 3 we see a zoomed out image of the shoreline, beautiful and calm, wild and undeveloped, Kate is still standing at the shore, dwarfed by the landscape. In panel 4 we see Kate looking up and shielding her eyes against the sun with her arm. In panel 5 we see her perspective, a seagull crossing the disc of the sun.

Also why are you asking elected officials to do something? Wholly unreasonable to think they should maybe do the work they’re elected to do rather than spend the entire time they’re there sucking off corporations and clinging desperately to power long into their senility.

Love that the blocklist claiming you’re antisemitic links an apartheid ethnostate with Judaism.

MZS over at RogerEbert.com gave it four stars. And not just because Ebert gave the original four stars back in the day.

Plaster head cast privilege over here.

Just the idea that they have to move against and in relation to each other seems like a Whole Thing.

One labeled as “roughly Zoë sized”.

That does make sense though. Two very different approaches to the same problem using completely different skillets to solve the various issues.

Do they do it for sound reasons? Is there something you can do to gain the same benefit?
