It sort of looks like a succulent, but it's a herbaceous, parasitic plant that doesn't contain chlorophyll.

I think it started with Hen Harriers in the UK and spread from there.

I'd have to find and check my notebook from the time, but I seem to recall estimating one flock at 30,000 birds.

I was used to counting large flocks, having been part of a group surveying a winter gull roost in the 1990s.

Thanks, Alan. I thought it was unusual to have two juveniles of different species side by side. Especially as it was my first record of Eurasian Tree Sparrow for the location.
