One of the saddest truths I've see on social media. When will we wake up and realize that sacrificing anyone for personal safety will never provide long term safety for anyone?
rosalarian.bsky.social
Trans people are constantly seen as a reasonable sacrifice so that everyone else will be left alone. We might as well be thrown into a volcano.

We need a Schoolhouse Rock reboot that focuses on civics and factual history - with inclusive graphics. They were effective. I just read the words "constitution" and "we the people" in a skeet and now that song is going through my head unbidden.

It is important to recognize that mental health symptoms can show up at school in ways that are often misinterpreted as bad behavior. This contributes to absenteeism and the school to prison pipeline. 🧵 #MIAW

Great representation of the various books by Black authors that have been banned.

Banned books are banned knowledge.
emergentjustice.org
Research shows reading is great for mental health and reading books that reflect a person's lived experience matter.
Unfortunately, authors regularly face banning. These are just a FEW of the titles by Black authors on the Banned List.

I was raised in a home where parental mental illness was present. Books were my lifeline to sanity and after I left home, they were the first steps I took to broadened my understanding of ppl different from me.

Knowledge, Community and Mental Health are all important for our liberation. This week we'll be sharing posts about all three as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week and Banned Books Week 2025. 🧵

#MIAW #BannedBooksWeek #CensorshipIsSo1984
The background is a gradient of yellow to orange, with three main sections:

**Left Section:**

* A photo of four people high-fiving each other
* The NAMI logo (National Alliance on Mental Illness) in the top-left corner
* A dark blue rectangle with white text that reads "BUILDING COMMUNITY Mental Illness Awareness Week Oct. 5 - Oct. 11, 2025"

**Middle Section:**

* A book cover titled "Banned Books Week" with a rainbow-colored title
* A black banner with white text that reads "CENSORSHIP IS SO 1984 READ FOR YOUR RIGHTS"
* A small logo that says "ALA.ORG/BROOKS" and "American Libraries Association"

**Bottom Section:**

* A statement in gray text that reads "Knowledge, Community and Mental Health are all important for our liberation"

Next to that is the logo for Emergent Justice.

I've been aware of who #AssataShakur was for a few years. Bought her autobiography after reading several quotes from her that really resonated. But it was like other books I've bought out of interest but not gotten to. Her death brought it to the top of my reading stack. Halfway through. Recommend.

What struck me was the number of times Coates had to make the point that, for the Black community, this isn't the worst they've experienced. And it isn't the first time that a period of moving rights forward for nonwht/nonCIS/non-male ppl has been met with a backlash. That is important.

Thanks to the media AND a public education system that conservatives have been undercutting since The Brown Decision.

Are you in Michigan? Help your school get the additional resources they need. Complete a Michigan School Meal Form TODAY. These forms are about more than just school meals. They help determine additional funding for classrooms, teachers and more! Follow this thread for the website.
A graphic displays the "School Meals" logo, which includes images of food items like a sandwich, banana, and apple. Below this graphic, the text "Did You Know?" is prominently displayed in a large, bold font. The text beneath this headline explains that School Meal Forms are about more than just school meals. They are used to determine additional benefits for classrooms, teachers, children, and guidance/college counselors. The text then provides two options for completing the forms: "Education and Nutrition Benefits Application" and "Education Benefits Form (formerly the Household Information Report)". Finally, the text advises contacting the school administrator to determine the appropriate form.

Do YOU remember “the 21st night of September?”

Earth Wind & Fire’s co-writer Allee Willis said she told the band: “We can’t leave ‘baa-dee-ya’ in the chorus. That has to mean something.’”

Maurice White replied: “No, that feels great. That’s what people are going to remember. We’re leaving it.”

1st, I want to acknowledge your sharing of this and thank you for it.

2nd, and this question (as was my 1st) is to @rephaleystevens.bsky.social : how can you call a vote to honor a man who used words as a weapon of political hate a vote against political violence?
debci.bsky.social
In the meantime, will you explain why you voted yes on today's Day of Remembrance vote?
debci.bsky.social
My Representative, @rephaleystevens.bsky.social voted Yes today. I am extremely disappointed.

Your local elected officials are your first line of defense. Make sure you are ready for Nov 4, 2025.

It's National Voter Registration Day! The online chatter may be about the 2026 mid-terms but there's important local elections happening before then. On November 4th many cities will hold elections for Mayor and City Council. Are you registered? mi.gov/vote
A stylized city map in shades of teal, green, and pastel colors forms the background. Overlaid on the map is text that reads: "It's NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY" in large, bold, uppercase letters. Smaller text below asks, "are YOU ready to vote in your city/county Local Elections?".

Below this, bullet points list actions to take, including: "Register for the 1st time", "Update your info if you've moved or changed your name", and "Double check voter information to make sure it's right".

A small, circular calendar icon in a dark-purple border displays "NOVEMBER 04" prominently. A lower-right corner graphic features a purple logo with a butterfly silhouette and the words "emergent JUSTICE". A web address, "mi.gov/vote", is presented prominently in a dark button-like style at the bottom.

You are right -- it is an ongoing processes. As you learn more, you see new ways it shows up in yourself and others. Not always in big blatent ways either. The nuances can be tricky and you'll miss them if you don't stay open to seeing and learning.
debci.bsky.social
And I do realize its environmental impacts. I would rather society's use of it slow down. But kids are already using it, and I'd prefer they learn to use it as a tool instead of doing it for them.

"Working with Teachers College, however, he realized how important it was to have a tool that inspired writing but didn’t do the writing itself."

This approach to AI seems promising to me. AI should assist, not replace a student's efforts (or anyone's efforts).

Emergent Justice isn't giving up on disenfranchised youth.

That's why we are a founding member of the Michigan Student Network for Pipeline Prevention AND why we're building a network of Peer 2 Peer Teams of young people that support each other to stay in school, stay out of trouble and on track.
Five young Black teens are grouped together outdoors, likely in a park or schoolyard. They are smiling and appear to be engaged in conversation. A light orange box/text overlay is positioned in the lower-center portion of the image. The text in the box explains a "Peer 2 Peer" program, emphasizing the support network among young people where young people help other young people stay in school, avoid trouble, and succeed. The logo for Emergent Justice and "MSNPP" are also visible in smaller text at the bottom right of the image. A question, "WHAT DOES THE PEER 2 PEER TEAM DO?", is posed in a light beige colored box centered at the top of a graphic. Below the question are five light-colored rectangular buttons, each containing a different answer choice. The buttons are in various pastel colors. From top to bottom the options are: Mentoring and Listening, Conflict resolution, Skill-building Workshops, Support for Teachers, and Community. In the bottom right corner of the graphic, a small logo is present, which has a butterfly image with the words "Emergent JUSTICE" in the graphic, and below that is the text "MSNPP". Two Black teens are seated in what appears to be a conference room or similar setting. The person on the left, partially visible, is wearing a mustard-yellow colored sweater. Three young Black teens, two male and one female, are seated together, smiling. They appear to be involved in a collaborative effort, possibly discussing something on a laptop or in conversation.

Overlaid on the image are several rectangular buttons, in pastel colors, that highlight reasons why a "peer to peer" team approach is beneficial. The buttons read: "WHY THE PEER 2 PEER TEAM WORKS," "Students Trust Peers," "Real-World Solutions from Peers," "Builds Community," and "Research Proven Results". A logo with a butterfly image and the words "MSNPP" and "Emergent JUSTICE" appears in the lower right corner.

Today's GOP would lose their minds if anyone in their party trotted out the positions of the Radical Republicans of the mid 1850's - 1860's. THOSE are the Republicans that ended slavery.
debci.bsky.social
Being the party that ended slavery - which they were - is the only part of history they want to keep intact. Of course, that was before they implemented the Southern Strategy to win in the 60s and the 2 parties switched positions on race.
debci.bsky.social
I figured that. But maybe you all have imposter squirrels.

Very cool and very South Minneapolis. Would l9ve to see this in other places.
