meanwhile on instagram. I barely post, reluctant to upset the Algorithm

paintstacking. someone is painting new layers of paint onto a piece of paper (?) every day, with the goal of eventually having 5 feet of paint layers. this process is being filmed & shared on instagram

optimistic part of me says they might play w those kinds of textures in 3d animation as well? feels like the medium is slowly moving away from being literalist, what with the spiderverse-arcane type stuff

on the + side though I remember a time when indie animation was like, 3 minute student shorts made by canadians or something, so while a lot of it isn't my cup of tea it's still nice to see smaller studios/creators able to do more w 2D these days

I also think it's an immature understanding of aesthetics on the part of the money men & maybe also audiences, where more 'realistic' rendering equals better. so since cg gets you glossy eyes & individual strands of hair it's the superior medium
