but then when you write those understandable or "sympathetic" villains (ie, they have a backstory of any kind) the audience accuses the author of forcing a "sympathetic" narrative because of the latter point ; it's truly an ouroboros of media illiteracy and an outright refusal to confront villainy

I'll say it: I think its rly annoying and frankly amateurish that writers are constantly told their villains must be understandable or have sympathetic motivation to be interesting or realistic when all our big villains irl are in fact rich, stupid, selfish, trickster dillweeds and always have been

he's definitely as headstrong in other ways as he used to be but you know... character arcs and all hehe

it'll definitely take him time to get better, he'll find some other meaning to life perhaps, i'll have to see where the game goes from here in order to fully know what i'll do 😌

I think it's just that Sariel has gone through a lot of stuff and he's just not really the same sort of person he was back in like ShB/EW, I think EW really was his strength peak and after that it just kinda all started going downhill from there.

Dawntrail being so low-key also kinda enabled his deterioration since nothing much was demanded of him aside from a couple moments at the middle and end. He's also the WoL so he's automatically just stronger than your average person. So I've kinda thought that it just takes him longer to get to a point where his aether no longer replenishes like it used to (he is innately very in-tune with aether but has never been physically strong since he relies on magic) and until he's clearly a worse fighter and can't manage anymore

The existence of Trevellain does alleviate some of it once Sariel finally starts eating the food lmao, it's kinda just like... he's just not doing super hot right now, he is slowly deteriorating but because he's the WoL it'll take him longer to become completely useless haha

he was stronger both physically and mentally before Endwalker like you described but he's like a severly damaged man now lmao, it comes with its disadvantages unfortunately x)

i haven't really thought about it from that perspective tbh, i guess it's a small inconsistency between canon and my own storytelling for him x)

he does like the bare minimum to be able to fight normally but he just isn't at a place where he cares too much about anything extra at this point

he's kinda like how people with depression can give great & sound advice to others but then they let themselves go

he knows that he should eat and sleep to be healthy, but he just doesn't care enough to actually do it

yeah but it doesn't really extend to his like... living habits? he doesn't like to eat, doesn't really like sleeping either, he kinda just soldiers on. the only self-care he is adamant about is like bathing and wearing quality clothes, but esp since EW his eating and sleeping has deteriorated a lot

you won't really notice it unless you are someone who can get close to Sariel in the first place and be able to touch him. i'd say probably only the Scions, the twin retainers and Trev actually know how much in bad shape Sariel actually is, esp after Endwalker... Zenos too ofc but yk....

Sariel wears the type of clothes that are form-fitting but have enough layers that you can't really notice that he's malnourished.

like, he doesn't care about his body enough to eat properly, but he also doesn't want to broadcast having an easily physically overpowered figure...
