11/25/25 - Wake Up Dead Man We went to see the new Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man, at the Paris Theater, which netflix owns and operates to satisfy the wealthy liberalism of new york's uptown elite class, keeping them fed and satisfied while the rest of the country starves for hi-quality 35mm theatrical runs of their favorite streaming sensations. or something. Especially when placed next to the tight tolerance jewelbox construction of the first Knives Out movie, which accounts fastidiously for every dangling thread, Wake Up Dead Man feels loose, with parts that shift and slide against each other as the puzzle rotates in Blanc's hands. this is true of both the mystery and the tone. where Knives Out wrapped a bow on each arc and micro-arc with a punchline, Wake Up Dead Man lets words and scenes trail off, punting resolution in the same way it punts The Jesus Question on all of its subjects' minds. It's built around that Question, or doesn't shy away from it at least. There's a lot of religion here. raging against it, cheering it on, questioning, expositing. the first act is narrated entirely by josh o'connor's pious Father Jud character, so we meet the players and see events unfold through his lens of earnest religious probing. the eventual presence of the rationalist benoit blanc doesn't hedge or antagonize that dense grappling with God, but he does temper it. They don't make the mistake of squeezing dramatic juice like lesser movies would from the annihilative matter/anti-matter of Father Jud's faith and Benoit Blanc's lack thereof (a fruit without much juice to begin with if you ask me). instead the two central characters are placed on the audience's shoulders, not to guide anyone's actions but to interpret them. you get to decide who the angel is and who's the devil, but that's also not really the point; your interpretation of the events at hand are secondary to their unfolding. 11/25/25 - 3 fish tacos Eating at Los Mariscos in tourist-cramped chelsea market in the inhospitably antiseptic neighborhood of chelsea (or the meatpacking district. it's one of those, and i'm not sure which. the sterility remains either way). chelsea market is a converted snack factory, formerly of the nabisco corporation, in its current state owned by google. neat. Los Mariscos is at the edge of the once factory, and in the heart of it is the original Los Tacos No.1 -- presently the most famous/vaunted nyc taco joint, with 9 locations around manhattan -- and there's a tight and twisty hallway connecting the two spots. Los Tacos serves land-based meats and Los Mariscos (spanish for "seafood") serves meats of the sea. They're related somehow, beyond just the geographical connection; Los Mariscos uses a nearly identical design language for their menus and signage. so for years i told anyone who would listen that Los Mariscos is just "the baja Los Tacos" or something like that. but now that i think about it, i've never read or heard anything that confirms this connection. they each have separate websites, neither of which have 'about' sections or mention the other institution in any way. both of the websites were made using Bentobox, some kind of web service for restaurants. the domain name for Los Mariscos' website ends with a "1". hmmm. The fish tacos are terrific. every time i eat here i get starry-eyed about the shredded cabbage topping which to me is a sign of success, cabbage being the lowliest of all the present ingredients. everything all together is crisp and full-flavored and bright. not overly fishy (a positive). i'd like to try everything on the menu but i'm allergic to 2/3rds of it. i realize that makes the fish tacos a risk for me. they're worth the risk. || derek

11/24/25 - cinnamon bun/pumpkin pie Hani's -- pronounced "honey's" -- Bakery in the east village, which is about a year old. Elise ran there and i took the train. i beat her there by a few minutes, so i watched her location and inspected the blob of deconstructivist architecture next door at 41 Cooper Square, which i've learned was designed by pritzker award winner Thom Mayne. i don't have much good to say about the building but i also didn't get much of a look at it. We were here on a cinnamon roll mission so we ordered a cinnamon roll. they call it cinnamon 'bun', which is the same thing. the pumpkin pie looked good so we got a slice of pumpkin pie, which they call pumpkin pie. This place is real luxy. custom oak built-ins from front to back, terrazzo everywhere, couple types of tile, hella sconces. the servers are all wearing these heavy chore coats with the seam down the back. you can tell they're expecting a lot of business. Luckily it's uncrowded on a monday morning so we take seats at the counter with our tray, a big round cake tray with a paper doily on it and our baked goods on the doily. They're trying to be famous for these cinnamon rolls, which are baked in individual tins and frosted with a thick icing that stays piled on top instead of draping down the sides like a glaze; a cupcake effect (probably why they call it a bun instead of a roll). ours was good but not excellent. that icing is heavy and cream-cheesy and the sweetness overwhelms the perfect brioche bread. the cinnamon filling is scant. the bread really is perfect, though. The pumpkin pie picks up the slack big time. beautiful piece of pie, in appearance and taste. it's not burnished and cracked and rustic like we see a lot of these days. fluffy balanced filling and buttery crust and it's topped with a torched meringue that brings creaminess and some marshmallow-y charm and it's not overly sweet. you might not know you're hiding a bad dale cooper impression until you try this pie. | derek
