From New York, Groll studied art in Europe before returning home in 1895. Initially a figure painter, he turned to landscapes and traveled west with ethnologist Stuart Culin in 1904. Groll returned often to the Southwest, finding success with his landscapes featuring low horizons and sweeping skies.

Yesterday I learned that US lighthouses would get a delivery of a library box every few months so the lighthouse keeper would have something to do. Can you imagine how exciting the darn thing’s arrival would have been?
