and that's my voice off to the side of the camera, having to (again) quote the penal code to LAPD. This keeps happening: getting threatened with arrest; officers claiming that they don't have to comply with the law for some reason. @shoton35mm.bsky.social and I were clearly displaying press badges.
1/31: Narrowly avoided being arrested when LAPD officers kettled a small group of protesters, legal observers, and press. I ID'd myself as a journalist & tried to leave but an officer claimed I wasn't exempt from dispersal orders & said I would be detained. Luckily another officer let me leave.

scenes from last night at a protest in LA. Several groups were here: on the other side of the Detention Center building was a vigil. This was slightly after that.

Another day, another outage — instead of rehashing why our reliance on a handful of big tech companies for our access to literately EvErYThINg is bad — I’m going to point you to the last three times I had to do that over the past 4 weeks, which led to a great convo with @dexdigi.bsky.social

NEW for the Ten Four:

The Adelanto ICE Processing Center and its conditions inside are the subject of dozens of concerning stories, but rarely is there an opportunity to actually talk to those inside the facility. I was able to get inside (kind of).

gotta be one of my favorite recent conversations. i recommend it (not because i'm in it, but because @micahflee.com broke this down so anyone could understand both the 'technical' side and the political side of why this means so much to people.)
I was interviewed on the Kill Switch podcast about @iceblock.app, the mutual aid group @norcalresist.bsky.social, and the insane situation we’re in where Apple and Google are collaborating with Trump to censor apps at will podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/k...
maybe ICEBlock was 'activism theater,' but is banning it protecting us?

Yeah I cant think of a good reason for this
LAPD now shooting 40mm foam rounds at people, some narrowly missing photographers who were stuck in between the line and protesters. Just absolutely evil shit.

yearly reminder to people insisting that we view Christopher Columbus as "a man of his time" that *the people responsible for the Spanish Inquisition* thought Columbus was out of pocket
Christopher Columbus was dragged back to Spain in chains by a crusading knight, convicted of tyranny and immeasurable cruelty, pardoned by Isabella but banned from returning to Hispaniola.

Fuck Columbus.
