New Yorker by way of PNW
This but also for public sector employees (and I mean actual employees, not consultants/contractors air dropping in). Talented, driven people shouldn't have to take a 50% pay cut to work in the public sector, especially in a city this expensive.
ryan is right. people HATE hearing this. but it is just a matter of simple incentives. if you want a more representative legislature — and if you want a legislature more resistant to corruption — then you need to jack up the salaries. serving as mayor of NYC should net you a cool 500K *at least*
people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up

Okay, now that we got Zohran elected it's time to focus on another important campaign--getting Joshua Henry his Tony.

The Nobel Peace Prize is so funny because it's one of those awards that's completely opaque and self-reflective in its meaning, but because it's been branded as totemic everyone takes it seriously. It's like the Golden Globes--if the award is stupid, why does it matter who it goes to?

At the phase of my aging millennial gaydom that literally any encounter with Defying Gravity makes me cry. This week alone it's been the UMich show band and a Lawrence cover in a Broadway melody.

GREATER CLEMENTS (Samuel D. Hunter, 2019)
the biggest force for rural resentment of cities in the last three decades is that cities got way better and the countryside got way worse.

"I heard down in Argentina...you know Argentina? Great country, really welcoming place to some Europeans who needed it. Anyway down there they're crying for me. Crying because what the radical Dems have done. But they don't need to do that, don't need to cry for me because we never stop winning."

Also New York isn’t in decline and remains the intellectual, cultural, financial, culinary and artistic capital of the country, in no small part due to the contributions of Jews and other minorities, most of whom live together in relative harmony, which is a miracle.

In this sample no one under the age of 70 includes Cuomo on their ballot. I sincerely hope that as I get older I maintain the humility to be aware of when my politics are way out of step with a younger generation and adjust accordingly.
The good news in this sample is that as a message, "Don't Rank Cuomo" clearly landed with people. And by "people" I mean famous people willing to share their ballots with the NYT. We'll see if that's enough. Meanwhile, I would like a word with Graydon Carter. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/22/n...

Don't have a fully formed thought on this, but I think RCV (which is Good) has unfortunately intersected with pundit-brain approach to voting (which is Bad). It does not matter who you rank first or second, as long as you don't rank anyone you don't want to be mayor. Easy as that!
