Our digital systems reward belonging over accuracy, with people gaining status by aligning with their group, not by checking facts. Once beliefs become tied to identity, more media literacy won’t shift behaviour, the social rewards run against work against it.

Avaloniac Productions were the sort of film company that would jump on any band wagon. Biker gangs are in? Let’s do Hell’s Angles vs Vampires? Skinheads? Let’s do Bovver Boys vs Zombies. Glam rock suedeheads vs ghosts. Unending, glorious trash. – Roger Clarke, film critic and historian, 1983

Bingo. That's what grinds my gears about making this into an "oh no data centers" problem.

That implies that it's new, & restricted to where there are data centers. Absolutely not the case. This is bog standard for rural areas with a lot of livestock, & has been for decades.

re: prev; a pretty good example of my lingering and constant fear that- look. I understand focusing on the thing(s) jacking up the problem to 11 is sometimes necessary, but am often not convinced people think there were underlying/extant issues that made that amplification possible/were already bad

Rolling Stone: clearly documents a 30+ year long con job. A rural county's own leadership lined their pockets by helping ag interests destroy the water supply.

Everyone who read the article apparently??: Amazon data centers did this in 2011

my last wrapped just hit; using tidal as hopefully a kind of interim thing until I maybe slowly transition back to... actually having files for things

anyway I see they noted the "this sucks" feedback from last year + I was lucky enough to have a year that made the top 5 race actually pretty great

Last night, snow could be seen visibly covering the ground of the Central US.

Also present in this imagery, thin high-level clouds provide enough transparency to view the lights of cities and towns underneath.
