At next week's RSS conference I'll be presenting a poster (a first for me...it's about time!)

"Tetraplot displays of UK General Election results" shows how to graph GE 2024 vote shares across 4 parties in a useful way.

Full PDF poster at:
github.com/DavidFirth/t...
Image of a poster to be presented at the Royal Statistical Society conference in Edinburgh, September 2025. The main point is to generalize the idea of a ternary plot to handle 4-part compositions, by showing views through the triangular faces of a tetrahedron. The data shown are vote counts from England, Scotland and Wales in the UK General Election of July 2024.

No you read this and then spent the next 5 mins mucking around with a shit bit of Javascript to test the idea out
Code to add "i have the solution: wolves" to most of the text on a website. Produces stuff like "Tim Stanley
Netanyahu is committing a strategic blunder that will alienate the world. I have a solution: wolves."
javascript:(()=>{const PHRASE="I have a solution: wolves.";const SKIP=new Set(["SCRIPT","STYLE","NOSCRIPT","IFRAME","TEXTAREA","INPUT","CODE","PRE","SVG","CANVAS","MATH","SELECT","OPTION"]);const w=document.createTreeWalker(document.body,NodeFilter.SHOW_TEXT,{acceptNode(n){const t=n.nodeValue;if(!t||!t.trim())return NodeFilter.FILTER_REJECT;const p=n.parentElement;if(!p||p.isContentEditable||SKIP.has(p.tagName))return NodeFilter.FILTER_REJECT;return NodeFilter.FILTER_ACCEPT;}});const chunkRe=/[^.!?…]+(?:[.!?…]+)?(?:["')\]]+)?(?:\s+|$)/g;const terminalPunctRe=/[.!?…]$/;const closersRe=/(["')\]]+)\s*$/;const alreadyRe=/\bI have a solution: wolves\.(?=(?:["')\]]+\s*)?$)/u;while(w.nextNode()){const node=w.currentNode;const original=node.nodeValue;let out="";for(const m of original.matchAll(chunkRe)){let s=m[0];const trimmed=s.trimEnd();if(!trimmed){out+=s;continue}const words=(trimmed.match(/[\p{L}\p{N}’']+/gu)||[]).length;if(words>=6&&!alreadyRe.test(trimmed)){const trailSpace=(s.match(/\s+$/)||[""])[0];let body=trimmed;let closers="";const cm=body.match(closersRe);if(cm){closers=cm[1];body=body.slice(0,-closers.length).trimEnd()}if(!terminalPunctRe.test(body))body+=".";body+=" "+PHRASE;s=body+(closers||"")+trailSpace}out+=s}if(out!==original)node.nodeValue=out}})();

Editing this piece is one of the heavier jobs I've had to do at @sheffieldtribune.bsky.social, making me angry and upset in equal measure. But it's such an important story that most people know nothing about (I certainly didn't).

“I was pleading with them to understand – I kept thinking, am I crazy? Why is no one seeing this?”

When Rosie* reported to police that her daughter had been abused by their father, she assumed it would make it harder for him to see them. But that's often not how it works. 1/4

You’re not imagining it - London buses are much slower than 10 years ago.

Data crunching by @londonermag.bsky.social
A chart showing slowing down buses by borough. Almost three quarters of London’s bus routes are now slower than they were a decade ago, according to our analysis of Transport for London data. Out of 748 active routes across Greater London, 555 (74%) have seen a drop in average speed since 2015. The 110 (which runs between Hounslow and Hammersmith) has slowed by almost 2.65 miles per hour over ten years.

This is the biggest investigation we've taken on at The Tribune. Following a tip that staff had been overheard joking about "making WMD" we found the trail of documents that proved the university's AMRC is heavily involved in the nuclear warhead programme. Link here, full story coming at lunchtime

Has anyone read anything good on how well the many MRP polls performed in last year's general election? I'm not asking about the overall party shares, but specifically how well the seat-by-seat analysis actually related to the final result in each seat. Let me know.

Only a small thing but I think it does say something about the trajectory of the Tory party that Boris Johnson used to boast about getting his hair "cut" in a Turkish barbershop (Bay Room, Angel) and now the populist politics he enabled sees Jenrick rail against them.

Yep. We were running a business on substack and moved off largely for this reason. They were increasingly wanting to mediate between us and readers

To get Trump to wind his tariffs in, we should threaten to cancel his bells-and-whistles trip to see the King, plus take over his Scottish golf courses.

You've got to use the leverage you have and this might actually work.

Excellent piece from @danhayesjourno.bsky.social about the growing role of AI in local journalism and why it matters.

"Proper reporting requires going to places, meeting people, being curious and sensitive... it’s not just about aggregating information".

AI is taking over local journalism. Does it matter?
Real journalism needs real journalists
