Gotta argue it!
kevincross.bsky.social
When I clerked in that court (yay state-court clerkships) the judge I worked for didn’t like a throwaway “argument,” cited the rule that briefs must contain “Argument in support of the party's position,” & tossed it. 🗑️ Can’t just slap down a cite and say “so we win,” gotta argue it.

Emory Law is conducting an open-rank lateral search for a Business Law professor!

faculty-emory.icims.com/jobs/151442/...
Description

Emory University School of Law seeks to fill a tenure-track position in disciplines related to business law, including mergers & acquisitions, securities regulation, corporate finance, and other related business law fields. The position is open to lateral candidates at the assistant, associate, or full professor rank who have at least two years of experience in a tenure track position. Candidates must have a J.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree, and a distinguished academic record. Candidates should have a strong track record and/or show outstanding promise in research in fields related to business law. For candidates meeting the law school’s standards for scholarly excellence and the demonstrated ability to teach business law courses, the interest in teaching first-year Contracts will be an additional positive factor.

Candidates must complete the online application which requires creating an account, uploading a resume or CV, and providing basic demographic information. In addition, applicants should submit a cover letter, a current CV, a published or unpublished academic article, a brief research agenda, and an indication of teaching interests (if not listed on the CV) to the chair of the Appointments Committee: Professor Kay Levine at law.faculty.appointments@emory.edu. I worked at least as many hours, often more, in my role as General Counsel to and Chair of our state utility commission. The pressures and exigencies came from different places, but the demands were the same or greater.

On the topic of law firm billable hours, do not assume that just because you do not go into big law you will be working any less. As a non-profit lawyer, there have definitely been years when I’ve worked the equivalent of 2,400 billable hours, and I know may of my colleagues have too.

Any other lyrics— don’t even try chronic town murmur or reckoning btw— just form vowels and syllables, and mean it

I get these constantly. Same few people calling, always a different number from somewhere else. Infuriating.

This is why there's never been a popular show called Law & Order: Appeals Unit.

As I’ve always said, I’m delighted to have coffee with law students and aspiring appellate lawyers. The one request I always turn down, which I sometimes get, is “shadowing.”

This would consist of sitting in my office staring at me rub my head at the screen.

Same for us appellate judges (and our teams), except on court day. They are welcome to come join us all the same, but they usually opt to wait for argument day.

***MY COUSIN VINNY LIVE-TWEET: THE RULES***

This lecture explores the cinematic classic 'My Cousin Vinny' through the lens of English and Welsh law.

Contributions and observations are welcome, but I'm perfectly prepared to tweet the entire film to a wall of embarrassed silence.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like
Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.
