Writer of poetry. To walk as a warrior, embracing grace, into the storms of darkness to breathe out light. Weaving the evil threads life hurls with the threads of wonder. Beauty is cultivated in darkness.

This week I want to #LiftToTheSky poet Brian Patten, who died September 29th; not so much for his poetry but this quote from him in a newspaper obituary, which goes to the heart of why we come together every week for #PoemsAbout #PromptCombo and others.

Brain Patten, Poet, 1946-2025

Writing poetry was a kind of therapy
for him. “You think about things which
are in you and sensations that are going
through you and if you understand them
you can grow in that knowledge. That
is what poems are for”.

Big thanks for last week’s fierce drops on #PoemsAbout. Next up: #ImperfectMe — bruised reflections, warped mirrors, un-Photoshopped truths. The new theme starts this Friday. Sign up for prompts: shorturl.at/0Xm7A Use Alt Text. Tag #PoemsAbout or get lost in the feed.
An ornate antique mirror with a heavily tarnished and speckled surface, reflecting a faint, distorted background. The frame is baroque-style, featuring elaborate gold and black detailing with a sculpted lion's face at the top. In the top left is The Broken Spine logo shaped like a fountain pen nib. The website "@thebrokenspine.co.uk" is written in white at the top right. At the bottom right, bold white text reads: "Read Repost Reply #POEMSABOUT #IMPERFECTME".

#PoemsAbout #Mannequin

I put the wrong prompt on here 🙄

I've missed a couple of recent prompts as I've been away. Here's a relatively quick write based on a real artifact that I've seen scare the living daylights out of numerous people. For @alanparrywriter.co.uk and #PromptCombo #mannequin

Wow! This is eery with a feeling of Edgar Allen Poe! I love the line “shadow scars floor!” Well done!

“Inarticulate”

Just couldn’t get it out

For #PoemsAbout #Mannequin

INARTICULATE

Coat sealed in resin,
ribs click shut.
Mouth splits,
no sound follows.

Footsteps brush past.
Door flares white.
Beloved outline
fixes frame,
pins body
between reach,
retreat.

One arm loosens.
Shadow scars floor,
half wing, half knife.

Silence hardens.
Her laughter picks
at stitches.

Behind lacquered ribs
scream flares,
blisters upward,
dies chewing on
roof of mouth.

My contribution to #PoemsAbout #Mannequin. It's a bit of a mess.

I actually wrote two poems for the prompt. One is more me centered. This other one is... not. I definitely want to work on it more. Give it more bite

Thank you, @thebrokenspine.co.uk & @alanparrywriter.co.uk for another great prompt!
He is the figurehead,

Some one that maybe isn'tdead,

Though I don't think

His heart had actually ever beat

They do what they can

To make his walking corpse

Look alive

As they prop him up

Above the gods

They act as his hammer

To beat down

Anyone and anything

that doesn't conform

To his vision of the world To keep the rotted one

As the figurehead

Of their insanity,

they'll coat him in plastic,

Replace his veins with wires,

Generate his thoughts with AI

They'll still prop him among gods,

And follow his commands,

They'd do anything

To make sure the lunacy never ends

Hello, Bluesky! I am here for poetry, mainly - the sharing of it, reading of it (when I should be working), and connecting over it. I am fully aware that with no followers, I am currently talking to an empty room - well, there is no authenticity without absurdity, after all. Why am I still talking?
