I want to take this moment during #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth to share a personal update. As many folks are aware, one year ago, in October 2024, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It motivated me to write on how the energy industry is linked to rising diagnoses 1/11 www.forbes.com/sites/kellyf...
How Reducing Reliance On Fossil Fuels May Also Combat Breast Cancer
Pollution from fossil fuel combustion produces carcinogens that have been linked to increasing rates of breast cancer.

Demand that dem leadership is held responsible for this
Important to understand this. There's a reasonable chance that your Dem Senator who voted against it and is acting mad now was in on the play. It's the same reason why they scheduled the surrender for AFTER the election this week. They didn't want people pissed at Dems right before an election.
The caucus meeting was just to orchestrate who would fall on the sword but not be up for a vote in 2026.

Please check yourself, get your yearly screenings, and donate to organizations that are reputable and helping patients like me. Pinkwashing is real, and many companies slap a pink ribbon on their product to sell it. 10/11

I’m open about my diagnosis, so don’t hesitate to ask questions or talk with me about it. If my experience helps illustrate the need for evidence-based environmental, health, and science policy, please share it. 9/11

The work I do in clean energy and transportation is more important than ever, and feels even more personal to me now. which is why I wrote this article. I also continue to be horrified by the state of healthcare and health insurance in the US, which is only getting worse and more expensive. 8/11

I am so grateful to the women who have come before me and paved the way for highly effective options for early-stage treatment. Still, not enough is being dedicated to metastatic breast cancer research, the only type that kills. 7/11

I underwent chemotherapy from November through March and followed that with surgery and continued immunotherapy. If you’ve wondered where I have been, it was likely my treatment. I will continue active treatment for another month, but I was declared cancer-free following my surgery in April. 6/11

Innovations in cancer treatment thanks to NIH funded research literally saved my life. 20 years ago, my prognosis would have been poor. Because of cancer research, mostly funded by the federal government, my 5 year survivability rate increased from 70% to 99%. This is personal 5/11
October 21, 2025 at 5:54 PM
This also comes at a time when regulations are being rolled back, funding for cancer research is being threatened and taken away, women’s healthcare is being attacked, and people who are skeptical of vaccines and medical research and treatment are running our health agencies. 4/11

Although no single reason for this rise has been identified, we know that environmental pollution in our air, water, and food is a contributing factor. 3/11

I wanted to share this because my career has focused on science, climate, and energy policy. Breast cancer treatment, prevention, support, and research funding for cancer are certainly policy issues. As we have seen in the news recently, cancer rates are rising, especially among women under 40. 2/11

@doctorkflem.bsky.social makes the case!
On day one of his second term, President Trump declared a national energy emergency.

Instead of speeding up the connection of new energy sources to the grid, Trump followed with a budget request for FY26 that kneecaps energy innovation.

For folks not in DC:
- There are full-on police checkpoints most nights
- Gangs of 30+ federal agents roam DC
- National Guard folks w/ guns patrolling a Harris Teeter
- Every day, multiple friends see ICE kidnapping ppl
- Daycares are scared to have kids go on walks due to ICE

Went ahead and updated my map of cities with higher crime than D.C. to accommodate the two new states from the Deep South who are sending troops to the capital. In the five states there are 64 cities, home to 1.7 million people, that had more crime in 2024 than D.C.

Friends on #energysky, I've joined @forbes.com as a contributor. My first story is on the importance of energy research investment on the US economy, and why the budget cuts proposed by the president are a threat to our grid and our position in the global economy. www.forbes.com/sites/kellyf...
Trump’s Cuts Could Exacerbate The Energy Emergency
The aging grid is in dire need of infrastructure upgrades. Instead of connecting new energy sources to the grid, Trump cut budgets for 2026, which may hinder innovation.

The climate crisis kills people. It has a cure: cut fossil fuels, increase renewable energy. Trump's tax bill just gutted that policy approach, so, we'll see more of this:

Death toll from Hill Country flash floods rises to 24 as rescue efforts continue
Local officials said they have rescued or evacuated more than 200 people since the Guadalupe River flooded early Friday morning, but the fate of more than 20 girls missing from a camp remains unclear.

I'm not proud of anything our country is currently doing, aside from the people speaking up, on this Fourth of July.
As a woman, as a scientist, as a climate policy expert, as a cancer survivor, as a person who will live on this planet for (hopefully) many more decades, I feel dread and profound sadness for the consequences of today's actions by 218 people and Tuesday's actions of 50 people.
