@Nick_Davidov Asked Claude Cowork organize my wife's desktop, it stated doing it, asked for a permission to delete temp office files, I granted it, and then it goes "ooops" Turns out it tried renaming and accidentally deleted a folder with all of the photos my wife made on her camera for the last 15 years. All photos of kids, their illustrations, friends' weddings, travel, everything. It's not in trash, it was done via terminal It's not in iCloud, it already synced the new file structure. She didn't have Time Machine. Disc recovery tools can't see anything. I called Apple and they pointed me to a feature in iCloud allowing to retrieve files that were saved before but are no longer on iCloud Drive (they keep them for 30 days). I'm now watching it load tens of thousands of files. I nearly had a heart attack. Here it is, a compilation of all the names seen on the Commemoration wall at #StarfleetAcademy. There are 208 names all in all, 2 characters (Airiam+Peter Preston) are listed twice. 92 names (44,23%, red) are of previously known characters, 116 names (55,77%, black) are new. This was a lot of work!

periodic reminder to delete the AI folder after MSFT Office's update

if it doesn't let you delete it bc it's "open" somewhere, go to your task manager, close every instance of Office, and try again

(even if you think you've deleted it, take 5 seconds to check and make sure it didn't reinstall)
officially about to set something on fire over MSFT sneaking in an AI utility in the newest Office update if you want to delete tf out of it, go to C: \Program Files\MicrosoftOffice\root\vfs \ProgramFilesCommonX64\Microsoft Shared\Office16 and delete the "AI" folder love that I'm gonna have to check every single time Office updates and delete the folder again (doubly pissed bc that mfer was giving me some serious lag AND fucking up scrivener)

Absolutely 100% this. Framed from the games industry and consumer angle but it covers why we should all be questioning, resisting and rejecting the whole AI thing way better than I could (I've tried - in pub arguments, failed to get the point over and come off as 'old man yells at cloud').

I'm sorry. As a technology writer, I'm supposed to be telling you that this bet will some day pay off, because one day we will have shoveled so many words into the word-guessing program that it wakes up and learns how to actually do the jobs it is failing spectacularly at today. This is a proposition akin to the idea that if we keep breeding horses to run faster and faster, one of them will give birth to a locomotive. Humans possess intelligence, and machines do not. The difference between a human and a word-guessing program isn't how many words the human knows. I'm sorry. I know that when we talk about "digital sovereignty," we're obliged to talk about how we can build more data-centres that we can fill up with money-losing chips from American silicon monopolists in the hopes of destroying as many jobs as possible while blowing through our clean energy goals and enshittifying as much of our potable water as possible.
