In a real way, tariffs are like a broken window.

Every dollar spent on fixing that window is money that could have gone toward literally anything else, and you won't see those things.

You don't see the art it would have gotten or the car repair or savings for having a baby or college or whatever

At the instant I write this, the mid market rate for EUR from USD is 0.8514. So in theory, US$100 is worth €85.14. But no forex operation could stay in business offering that rate. They have to add a margin to survive. So a 4% margin on that would mean you get €81.87 for $100.

Running a foreign exchange cash operation, especially with modern compliance requirements, is a pain. A fair price is around 4% or less from mid market. In more rural areas with limited volumes, prices around 6% from mid market are not unreasonable.

The mid market rate would be the "neutral" rate (halfway between average buy and sell rates) that you see on websites such as XE (just to pull a random example out of my hat 😉)
