Just came across the wires, Lindsey Vonn has had surgery on a left leg fracture after her crash in the women's downhill. What an awful outcome, would have loved to see her ski uninjured and make the podium.

time and time again, MAGA Republicans are more excited to target and root against American athletes who have spoken out against them (or, in this case, merely expressed ambivalence) than they actually are to celebrate winning American athletes
What Hess actually said:

“Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the US.”

There are the Olympics on right now, but what's even more incredible is that the Eglinton LRT is finally opening, 15 years after construction began, and I'm so here for this play by play. Honestly wondered if this day would ever arrive.

A real cool thing I have been enjoying is the children watching their parents, mothers especially, compete at the Olympics. Canadian curler Jocelyn Peterman's son Luke (with her husband and curling partner Brett Gallant) and speed skater Francesca Lollobrigida's son Tommaso, watching her win gold

And now so many more people are learning about Edouard Duval-Carrié's artwork, about the Haitian Revolution and then they're gonna start wondering about why Haiti was forced to pay reparations to France and
The International Olympic Committee ruled that an image of Toussaint Louverture, born into slavery and and leader of the Haitian Revolution, on Haiti’s uniforms violated Olympic rules barring political symbolism
Haiti's Winter Olympics team shines a positive light even as IOC removes patriot from uniforms
Haiti is making a statement at the Milan Cortina Winter Games with two athletes proudly representing the nation.

honestly feels unbelievable: Lindsay Vonn attempted and completed her training run today, a week after tearing her ACL, hitting a top speed of 74 mph.
They haven't fixed her ACL, it's just flopping around in there. And her other knee is made out of titanium. Very literally built different

"I got mine buddy, too bad you'll never get yours."
I think it's time we just ignore the NIMBYS and build anyway. Stop putting so much stock in public consultation - maybe we could even do away with it for while?
"Maybe the city's full" says the man living in a 2.7 million dollar house on Palmerston, while sipping $170 scotch after defeating a multiplex proposal across the street.

Taking any sort of public transit in southern Ontario since the snowstorm has been very frustrating. We live in a country with snow. Why is this so hard?

The federal government should be much *more* aggressive with Toronto.

It is the place in Canada that most badly needs and could best deliver more housing.
At bedtime 6-year-old and I were discussing how libraries and other services we enjoy are funded by taxes. He said, "So if there are more people, then the government can have more money to do stuff." More neighbours please!
honestly the Federal Liberals need to be meaner to municipalities that refuse to upzone and yet ask for HAF funding

more density in toronto means more urban votes

The most important thing in today's Epstein files may involve 4chan. In 2011, Epstein met with 4chan creator Christopher "moot" Poole; that same day, Poole launched the /pol/ board that 3 years later would be the heart of Gamergate. And Gamergate was the start of the movements that led to Jan 6. 1/
he also appears to have met moot the same day /pol/ was (re)launched (not my image)

Make Minnesota the 14th province or territory doesn't have quite succinctness as "Canada the 51st state" but it is a sign of the times. From obvs Jesse Ventura www.mlive.com/news/2026/01...
Former Minnesota governor says state should seek to become part of Canada
Former Governor Jesse Ventura proposed the plan in an interview recently while saying "it’s obvious Donald Trump don’t want us.”

it's also a demand never made of, say, rural people who won't go into the city because they think they'll be murdered.
"getting outside your bubble" is an admirable thing when it means trying a new hobby or introducing yourself to your neighbor or watching an art film but people only want to apply it to "being a little more racist just to see how it feels"
these people seem like idiots

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Truly chilling words coming out of Minnesota today
The request includes a declaration from a witness who filmed today's shooting of Pretti.

Read their words:

"I feel afraid. Only hours have passed since they shot a man right in front me and I don't feel like I can go home because I heard agents were looking for me.
