A return to merit, they say.
"Manny Diaz Jr., a former Republican lawmaker and Florida education commissioner who had been serving as interim president since July, was announced as the sole finalist in November." 11-1 vote. Only the Faculty Senate representative to the board voted no.

OTF wouldn't stand for this form. All the older ladies I work out with know how to hip hinge (and usually have way better deadlift form than men, fwiw).

rare to see an american politician speak in these terms and it rocks
“When I speak about making our city more affordable, my vision is not limited to the homes that we live in or the child care that we’re making universal — it’s also a vision where we make it possible for working people to afford lives of joy, of art, of rest, of expression.”

May have to duck for this one, but I don’t airline seats should be able to recline.

You want to sleep and I need to work. Why does your need to recline take precedence?

I really appreciated this article by @drkevinrmcclure.com on faculty motivation and its connections to self-determination theory. It got me thinking about how to help faculty feel that their work is valued and meaningful. When traditional rewards are threatened, leaders need to support autonomy.

It’s unreasonable to expect professors to hit hurdle after hurdle and still stay in the race. Institutions are going to have to clear some obstacles.

My New Year’s resolution is to cook the appropriate number of tater tots. I apparently have two modes: make 8 or make 62.

I was on a tour of congress and the guide asked a trivia question, which I got because of reading Destiny of the Republic. But then *no one* wanted to talk with me about how awesome Garfield was. I was so ready.
Really excited to read the book that the show was based on, Candice Millard’s DESTINY OF THE REPUBLIC. Shout out to good television adaptations of history books.

Reposting this piece because it came out before the holidays and, well, I like it :)
In Advice: Faculty creativity is suffocating under an expanding regime of reporting and metrics. Not every minute of the day or event needs to have a demonstrable benefit to institutional goals. https://chroni.cl/49tT1Z1

I have never once aimed for objectivity in my teaching because that's not how human relationships work. I have absolutely aimed for open, respectful discussion where I offer students a range of resources to expand their thinking, including pieces I don't agree with.
You don’t need to be a poststructuralist to know that “objectivity” is a loaded and coercive term and a very poor standard for teaching. In my experience the classroom should be respectful, open, fair, safe, and informed by evidence and reason.

A very large pet peeve I have is staying at a nice hotel where it’s a battle to get a table at any of its restaurants. Some of these places stuff people in without regard for whether they have capacity to feed people.
