Sure, machine learning in science and a few other limited applications is fine.

But consumer-facing LLMs and generative "A.i." that are based on theft, push disinfo, and can be manipulated by billionaires?

B'alith squirms against the light touch and the brush is pulled away. A whine falls from his lips in response to the loss of sensation, withdrawn so abruptly it feels as if a thread has been snapped. He feels its absence keenly, despite how he knows its return will bring him no closer to relief. "Be still," Zhai'a murmurs. "If you move around overmuch, the paint will smudge, and I will have to begin again." B'alith's tail curls against the skins in annoyance, yet he obeys nonetheless. He knows all too well now that his husband is the sort of man who would rather make promises instead of threats.

They sit in relative silence for the first few passages of the needle through his thick skin, until a particularly sharp jab elicits a hiss from both brothers in tandem. "You're not someone known for her delicate touch, I take it," the Mighty grouses. His brother either does not share that sentiment or makes a more concerted effort at hiding his displeasure, for the Mystic's response is a measured, "Let her work. We have endured far worse." "I would certainly hope so," Khaliun says dryly, tying the suture into a secure square knot before cutting the thread with her teeth. She is not oblivious to the way that Bakool Ja Ja's breathing seems to still each time she brings her mouth within an ilm of his scales. "If you can be felled by nothing more than a needle, then you will not last long in the Landsguard. And here you were hoping to be Dawnservant." The Mighty, never known for his eloquence, responds with a petulance that Khaliun has come to expect from the more brash of the siblings. "Shut up." "I know your mother taught you better manners than that." Khaliun's expression is entirely unsympathetic as she runs the needle through the edges of his sundered flesh once more. "The less you complain, the faster this will go." That manages to pacify the Mighty into silence, at least temporarily. The Mystic, always the more diplomatic of the two, chimes in in his place. "Thank you for your assistance. Healing magic has never been my forte." "Nor has it been mine," Khaliun says, offering the Boonewa a wry smile. "My attempt at learning the art of conjury was pathetic, at best. Hence why I rely on more traditional means of healing." "It would be a valuable skill for us to learn as well, Brother," the Mystic says, extending an olive branch towards his sullen sibling. "I'm sure Khaliun would teach us." The Mighty gives a noncommittal grunt. "It must be difficult, always being the mature one in this relationship." Khaliun's tone is pitying, yet she pointedly maintains eye contact with the Mighty as she speaks. "Your patience is admirable." The Mystic laughs, even as the next passage of the needle causes him to wince. "It is something that I have had my entire life to cultivate." To his credit, the Mighty does not rise to the obvious bait. Khaliun can't help but feel disappointed. Having had her fill of fun, she addresses the pair in a sobering manner. "That was brave of you both to take the hit for Prishe. Granted, it was exceptionally stupid of you to simply throw your body in there without any real protection, but brave nonetheless. Selfless, even." "It's not like there was any time to think," the Mighty argues, even as the praise appears to soften his edges and render his protest toothless. "She was in danger, so we did something about it." "As I said," the Mystic adds, "we have endured worse." Khaliun sighs as she ties off the last suture. "That impulsivity will get you both killed if you do not learn to keep it in check." She severs the last of the thread, noting how the Mystic's face is tinged with a faint dusting of purple as she does so. "But I am grateful to you for acting so decisively in the face of danger, and for the sake of someone else at that." The Mighty sheepishly looks away, suddenly very interested in the architecture of lower Jeuno. "It's what you would have done." "I suppose it is," Khaliun solemnly agrees, igniting a flame with her fingertips so that she can re-sterilize her needle, "though I have also spent many years doing exactly that. You may be a skilled fighter—t'would be foolish to deny that—but you are still learning how to put your body on the line for someone else. I only ask that you exercise caution." "Sounds like you're worried about us," the Mighty mutters. In contrast to the compliments she has given him regarding his courage, he still does not brave a glance at her. Khaliun's brow furrows as what she thought was obvious is brought under scrutiny. "Of course I am. I care about your well-being." "You would be a fool to think otherwise," the Mystic chides his brother, giving Khaliun a lift down from the ledge she had perched on to reach the level of his wound. "Why would she tend to us so, if she was not concerned for us?" "I meant that she has no reason to worry," the Mighty amends. His tail grows restless beneath their united front. "Blessed siblings are not so easily broken. And if someone of your size can withstand a hit like that, we have no excuse not to." "Oh?" Khaliun folds her arms and gives him a dubious look that would make a lesser man fold. "And here I thought that I was the big, scary adventurer. My mistake." The Mighty has no retort. Khaliun celebrates her victory by giving him a placating pat on the knee, much as she would prefer to do so on his cheek. Extending her own peace offering in the form of a smile, she says, "You have a good heart, Bakool Ja Ja. Both of you do. You need to take care of yourselves if you want to help the world in the ways that I know you can." She tucks her suture materials back into her satchel. The two brothers sit with their hands clasped, gazes trained on their lap, and allow her commendation and concern alike to linger in the air between them. "I apologize if my behavior is overbearing." She steps forward and unfurls a single finger of theirs so that she might clasp it in her comparatively diminutive hands. "I always have been a worrier, and I am aware it can be smothering." "I do not find that to be true, and we are grateful," the Mystic replies, taking it upon himself to express his brother's own gratitude while the Mighty responds with a more taciturn, "It's fine." The latter seems transfixed by the sight of her holding his hand—or, her best attempt at doing so. "My sutures should suffice until we can get you to a proper healer," Khaliun says, relinquishing her hold. If he is disappointed, he is too proud to say so. She continues, "Until then, no more heroics. There is far too much work to be done for you two to die. Understood?" "Yes ma'am," the brothers respond in unison. "Good." To seal the deal, she beckons them to lean down with a crook of her finger. "Help me out here. You boys are too gosh darn big." The brothers exchange a glance before complying. Stooping lower, they bring their faces close enough that she can bring them in for a hug. "That's a promise."

Fluffvember Day 26: Wounded

Post-EW, Aymeric just wants to take care of a lizard.

He woke to being set down on a feather-soft bed, and when Aymeric straightened to move away, Holle reached for him instinctively. “I’m still here,” he assured him, cupping his cheek for a moment. “I just need to take your boots off, that’s all.” Once Holle had mrr’d his acceptance of this necessity, he proceeded to do exactly that. Under ordinary circumstances, this was not a task he would have needed help with, and had he not been so godsdamned tired, he probably would have protested and at least tried to do it himself. But he didn’t have even that in him. By the time Aymeric had finished, Holle had nearly dozed off again, and was only stirred by a gentle hand against his horn. “Do you want to sleep? Or would you like a proper bath? I think your scales could do with some oil, but it can wait for tomorrow, if you’d rather.” A bath sounded…wonderful, once he managed to process the thought. Like something that might help him feel like an actual person again. “Mm,” he answered, willing his body to sit up in spite of the pervasive exhaustion and the countless aches that all blended into. “If it’s not too much trouble?” “Never.” Aymeric pressed a kiss against his forehead and gently scooped him into his arms again before he could make any further efforts to get up. “I can walk,” he mumbled, though even he was unconvinced. “That may be,” Aymeric allowed, “But you should save your strength. You’ve had a long day.” It wasn’t like he’d done anything. Dozed. Been visited by his parents. Dozed off again. Eaten something, because someone had insisted. Fallen asleep. But for his first full day awake (more or less) in the weeks since he’d nearly died, that was apparently enough. Aymeric set him on the edge of the tub to tug off his loose clothes, and Holle grumbled, though wasn’t sure whether he said he could do it himself or just thought it. Either way, the sentiment was clear enough. “Let me take care of you, Holle.” Aymeric cupped Holle’s face in his hands, thumbs brushing over his cheeks. “Please?” There was a pain and a pleading there that Holle couldn’t say no to; though he hated needing help, hated the thought of being an imposition, but the look in Aymeric’s eyes made it clear that he needed to do this. And he had been doing this. For six weeks, while he’d waited for Holle to wake, not knowing if he would wake, he’d been taking care of him. Holle leaned into him with a sigh, and nodded. For that, he received another kiss to his brow. “Thank you.”
