Last year, we made the decision to step away from X.

The Royal Irish Academy is committed to creating, convening, and sharing knowledge for the public good and as an organisation we value Independence; Integrity; Curiosity; Openness and Rigour.

In our view, X no longer aligns with these values

If your academic institution or library is still using X, now is the time to push them to leave. There is no excuse to stay.
“We’re no longer just talking about errors of omission, where the owner of a major social media platform might not devote sufficient resources to mitigating these harms....[Musk] appears to be actively enabling harm-making tools, and then laughing about it.” www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...
X users tell Grok to undress women and girls in photos. It’s saying yes.
The site is filling with AI-generated nonconsensual sexualized images of women and children. Owner Elon Musk responded with a laughing emoji.

I'm doing a thread of everything I've published this year, but amassing everything I'm struck by how fast the Trump admin moved to wreck the country. I figured that they would move a bit more slowly breaking everything, but no, 2025 was the year of the crowbar and the wrecking ball.

Covid triggered emergency remote teaching, a “temporary” mode that soon solidified baseline expectations of flexibility, scalability, and platform dependence. But it is the uncertainty of when the crisis will end which it has most in common with GenAI.
January 1, 2026 at 12:41 AM
Education under Covid and GenAI is polycrisis pedagogy, fixated upon fixes. Today in FT:

"medicine has become too focused on crisis since the advent of antibiotics and has lost sight of the more holistic approaches to mental and physical suffering that existed before the profusion of modern drugs"

If someone says to you, "what are you doing about students' use of AI?" ask them, "do you think that this should be my problem? How good do you think my response can be? Should it not be up to legislators & administrators to defend against a commercial industry's attack on your child's education?"

Will AI save me time?

Do we measure work by how much time it takes?

Or time by what we work on?

As someone from rural Ireland I was deeply honoured when @elaineburke.bsky.social introduced me as “the AI man” on a panel at the Media Literacy Ireland Conference.

I am bullish about AI’s future prospects as it did help power the economy of North Tipperary for many years when I was growing up
