In the center of the page is a malformed eye, surrounded by a sea of writhing tendrils, with two other eyes -that once belonged to the masks- hidden within the entwined mass. The tendrils hold two half-broken masks moulded to the face of a young adult on each of its sides. The tendrils create the illusion of a fringe on the top of the face where it holds the masks in place, more tendrils crawling out of the eye hole on the left mask, and the eye and nose of the right mask. One of the mask’s mouths is gauzed shut while the other remains open. The piece uses stippling and hatching to create depth and texture in the drawing. Black and white ink illustration. The illustration is of a woman posing for a portrait. Her body is in the profile view while her head is turned towards us. She is wearing a billowy dress with puffy sleeves with a corset over the top. Her face is blank, devoid of any features besides a faded terrifying looking face, and is holding her arms behind her back. She stands in front of a windowsill looking out on some rose bushes, forest, and the night sky. Black and white traditional illustration of a Victorian style portrait. The woman seems to be sitting in the interior of a submarine. She sits patiently, with her hands folded on her lap. She is wearing an intricate dress with a long collar that extends up her unnaturally elongated neck. where a person’s face should be is the distorted features of an angler fish with long finger-like teeth. Her dark hair appears wet as it drapes along her neck and shoulders, down and out of view. The illustration is made with micron pens on paper.
