🚨New publication alert!

We just published a brief on what happens to parenting students' chances of success in college when they are threatened with eviction. The results are devastating. I have never cried when writing up research before. I did this time.

Ousted from Opportunity: Eviction's Adverse Impact on Parenting College Students
New America partnered with the Eviction Lab to understand how eviction affects parents who are attending college while caring for children—and found it likely leads to severe negative consequences.

I’m old enough to remember when the president wearing a tan suit was an affront to the dignity of the office.

Fascinating that the current president flipping an American worker off is framed as “mold breaking” by Politico this morning.

But this one hit today.

And she's right! We're not dealing with some foreign ideology. We're dealing with a uniquely American phenomenon.

A quick 🧵 about Thurgood Marshall, civil rights, and Trump’s recent argument that, “White people were very badly treated, where they did extremely well and they were not invited to go into a college or university.” (You can find more in chapter 8 of The State Must Provide)

So pleased to see @bakerdphd.bsky.social launch her column for @insidehighered.com

Starting out with a powerful piece on how today’s censorship is a consequence of the long tail of McCarthyism

Censorship Arrives on Campus
In her debut column, “Echoes in the Quad,” higher education policy scholar Dominique J. Baker explores how the political oppression of the McCarthy era reverberates in the stifling of academic freedom...

Nice piece from @erickelderman.bsky.social about where FIPSE funds are being spent.

Accreditation needs improvement, but it’s hard to see how that will be accomplished by funding non-profits with zero higher education experience.

Want to Transform College Accreditation? Trump Has a Grant for You.
Millions of dollars in new awards are going to established organizations and colleges planning to switch accreditors. But a few recipients have no past experience in the field.

That’s, ummmm… quite the word choice there.
Ogles: "It's important that we have a stake in Greenland, that they are quite frankly a protectorate of the US. They've been in relationship with Denmark - that needs to end. We've spilled more blood protecting Greenland than the Danes... we are the dominant predator force in the Western Hemisphere"

Much like the New Testament, it turns out that if you do the reading, Plato is too progressive for folks who are “ensuring viewpoint diversity”

Texas A&M Bans Plato - Daily Nous
Drop the race and gender material from your course and the Plato readings, or teach a different course. You have a day to decide. That's a paraphrase of what Martin Peterson, professor of philosophy at Texas A&M University, was told by university officials today about his upcoming "Contemporary Moral Problems" course, due to start next

This is a bad idea anywhere.
Doing it with a neighbouring country, is truly dangerous.

If only from a self interested lens you’d think they could see how bad an idea this is.

Nice little reply thread from Mia about the (bad) realities of term limits
Hi. I'm a registered lobbyist in the state with formerly the strictest term limits in the country. Term limits destroyed all institutional knowledge and trust in the legislature. Yes we became more influential, as did legislative staff & the Executive Branch, but we still backed term limits reform.

I’m sure engineering regime change will work out great for this admin, as it has so many times before
January 4, 2026 at 2:27 PM
It’s not a suggestion. There’s mountains of evidence that terms limits aren’t good, and don’t do what most people think they would do.
I disagree with the suggestion that term limits would further empower lobbyists and therefore we shouldn't consider them as a viable path forward. The current system of federal elected officials who are financially incentivized to become insider traders until they choose to retire isn't working.
