Spent most of the day doing field work with my independent research student. We visited a neat outcrop of sedimentary rock between Catoctin Formation lava flows. The ~4m strat column here grades from mud at the bottom through arkosic turbidites and into a conglomerate full of rounded pebbles. ⚒️

I’d like to thank @geotripper.bsky.social for perfectly threading the periods of foul weather for his Death Valley Field Study that @xenolith.bsky.social and I will be joining this Thursday-Monday. Well done!
There will be a period of tranquil weather Thursday-Saturday, making for smooth pre-holiday travel, but it will be a stormy Presidents' Day week. A series of systems beginning Feb. 15 or 16 will drop very heavy snow (likely 4-8 feet) in the Sierra Nevada and bring copious rainfall from S.F. to L.A.

For those of you who are very busy people, how do you have relationships? How do you CONSTANTLY explain to your partner that you are busy? Cuz mine does not seem to grasp the idea. Like, did you think I am where I am in my career and life cuz I take it easy.
I am so annoyed!!!

My final #FridayFold from December's visit to Mosaic Canyon in Death Valley NP in California. This one is pretty crazy, with at least two hinges. See if you can make any sense of it. ⚒️

First week was a success! I got momentum y’all!!
I am so humbled and forever thankful to my colleagues all over the country who have helped me with historical geology resources and so much help! We gotta be the closest net discipline out there. Special shout out to @callanbentley.bsky.social for always coming through!

How about you go to the front lines and march with your people. Walk the walk and talk the talk! I am tired of “I made a phone call” “I wrote a strongly worded letter”
I’ve never been prouder to be a Minnesotan.

On a happier note: my current hyper fixation is being able to do arm balancing. Here is a couple of crows. Reach out to your Adhd friends. They are doing dumb shit.

School starts Monday. I got these emails from a student enrolled in one of my classes. Same student harassed the other geologist last semester. Prof asked to remove him. As someone who had a student stalker before and spent 7 months in court getting a restraining order he broke. I am not well

A M4.9 quake occurred this evening north of Indio. It is east of the San Andreas fault, far enough away to not change the likelihood of a quake on the San Andreas. It's located very near the minor EW-striking Blue Cut fault

No body else (the other geologist who got hired for it) wanted or could teach Historical Geology this semester, so the school was gonna get rid of it and the geology degree so I took a bullet for our 7 geology majors. I have no idea how this is gonna go. It is so out of my scoop! Wish me luck! 😭😭😭

We (as a department w the union) filed a grievance against our dean. Guess who denied the grievance? The dean himself! How is this possible?!
