Little ask for any of you interested in football, history or Dublin 8 and surrounds.

@historystpats.bsky.social was a big success on Twitter but we left because it is the worst place in the world. Very few have followed us here. It would be great to get a few more follows and some amplification! 🔴⚪️

Received this text message from my father yesterday. Panicked that he had had a stroke, or similar.
Turns out it was my iPhone trying to transcribe the Irish language.

One of those deaths that makes you shout, “oh no!” at the phone, which I suppose is the very modern tribute to a wonderful career. Thanks for the decades of laughs, Catherine. www.theguardian.com/film/2026/ja...

Irish Independent trying to create a clickbait non-story here. Imagine how much time and meetings it would take for a complete brand overhaul for a big local council with lots of different branches and visual identities to factor in. 44k seems good value.

I know I don't shut up about this but, fellow Irish people, if you see a racist sticker when you're out and about, then tear it off.
It takes ten seconds.
Even if you only manage to tear away a part of it, it shows that your neighborhood doesn't stand with the small, hateful people that put them up

Absoutely! As someone who lives here, it has been quite disturbing to witness so many people get excited and wish ICE upon Philly. I don't care how "gritty" we are, please stop it!
I keep seeing varieties of Philly against ICE, and while I understand the sentiment, it is really starting to feel like people are willing it for entertainment value. Fuck that! While you're all laughing about Philly fucking up ICE, real people with complextions darker than milk are going to suffer.

Had a pretty convincing scam call from a lady pretending to be from my mobile operator.

Said there was a Jan promotion of 20% off — did I want in?

And if so, I’d get a six digit code texted to me. Which immediately came (from my real operator’s SMS)…

During the massive storms last year I was in the Yellow House in Rathfarnham, and some salty old dog at the bar told the barman that the wind was that strong "it'd tear a fiver from a Cavan man's hand".
The five best phrases I’ve heard for strong winds...

1. Blowing half a pelican (Danish)
2. Blowing hats and hay (Norwegian)
3. Blowing a hoolie (Scots)
4. Wind so strong it could blow a pig on to its hind legs (Estonian)
5. It’s so windy one of the chickens laid the same egg three times (English)

Any recommendations for books in Irish that are not of a difficulty that makes them impenetrable for a learner but challenging enough to give plenty opportunities to look up words or phrases? Not textbooks, more like novels etc. - I've a few graphic novels but ideally something longer. #Gaeilge

Life tip: If you miss going to video libraries and borrowing videos or dvds, I'm delighted to tell you that *actual* libraries have dvds, *and* you can reserve films to borrow (whether they're new or old).

*Additionally* they have loads of films that aren't on streaming.
