Compulsory education and universal literacy are things that will not survive the century if they have their way. These things were necessary when they needed clerks and factory workers. They don’t now. Amazon can just tell you which colorful buttons to push.

Matt’s relationship with his girlfriend was, unsurprisingly, bad. Eventually, she had enough.

So, in the middle of the night, Matt parked outside of her parents’ house. And laid on the horn until she came out and walked to the truck.

And then he put a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

I cannot tell you what the last four months of Matt’s life were like. I lost touch with him. The last time we talked at all, it was about the Akashic Library.

And, one day, there’s little story in the paper about cops getting called to a suicide.

Matt did the worst thing I’ve ever seen.

Matt was mentally ill. With 24 years distance, I think he was probably schizophrenic.

His family didn’t think that. They thought he needed Tough Love.

So, every time Matt plowed his truck into something, he’d get the shit kicked out of him before getting a new one.

Well, Matt’s life started to fall apart when he was 17. He started drinking, and using hard drugs. He’d turn up places in a bathrobe and slippers. He’d hang out with degenerates like me.

He got obsessed with speed reading, and with neurolinguistic programming.
