It's why I roll my eyes at nerds (it's almost always nerds) who get excited about "A Predator movie set in <xxxx>" or whatever. That's not a story...that's a music video.

"Stuff" in a story should be the vehicle that carries the idea forward, NOT the central point. If you have to start your pitch with "In a world that has <xxx tech>", you have probably already failed.

In the "old days", I used to care about things involving *stuff* - like, "I wanna make a story with mechs!", or "I wanna do a cyberpunk story!" Now, I tend to think about a social twist, and how that would impact a world with mechs. People first, flash second.

Funds to help other countries aren't coming out of funds to help the USA....it's completely possible for both to happen at once. Self care is important, but you don't solve problems by thinking only of yourself.

I get as annoyed by the "Left" complaining about the USA helping other countries as I do the "Right." Doesn't mean I agree with just giving them $$$, but the powerful ALWAYS have a responsibility to those with less.

So Lightbox Expo is this weekend...from a FOMO standpoint, I wish I was there, and I could REALLY use the energy boost from being around a bunch of cool artists...but the film industry in LA is at below 2023-strike levels. Gonna be lots of sad job seekers that a cool con can't help meaningfully.
