There is a fine line between advocating for your autistic child and coddling them.

At the same time, pressuring an autistic to make too many changes simultaneously or too quickly is equally damaging.

This is why parenting autistic kids is so challenging - it's a constant balancing act.

This is why I always struggled with making seasonal earrings! My brain is currently in Halloween mode & cannot even begin to understand that Christmas is soon after haha

Bahahahahaha! Something similar happened to me recently. I was in an irritated mood & I answered the unknown number saying, "Yes? What do you want?" in an unpleasant tone. It was a teen calling to see if my son was going to chess that evening 🤣

It took me having 2 diagnosed autistic kids, seeing a video of me as a child acting *exactly* like my own autistic child AND the anecdotes from autistics on Twitter before I thought "Hey, maybe I could be autistic" Absolutely bananas in hindsight 😅

Many (not all) Autistic people struggle with phone calls. This is not because we're being awkward or lazy. There are genuine reasons why they're hard and why we can be paralysed with fear at the thought of dialing that number. 1/9

The neurodivergent experience of asking someone for feedback and genuinely wanting feedback and being frustrated when they just say “it’s great!” vs when they ask you for feedback and you invest time/energy in providing thoughtful feedback and they get upset you didn’t just say “it’s great!”

Just because I like bright colors, glitter pens, and cutesy things, it doesn't mean I am a child. If anything, my level of maturity & responsibility is higher than 90% of my peers. I've worked in childcare, healthcare, and the primary caregiver for 3 amazing kids while running an entire home.

10 & I went to her 1st concert Saturday! She has loved Linkin Park for years & was SO excited to see all of the members in person (especially Mike & Emily). I remember listening to Hybrid Theory in my Sony portable CD player at 13 years old thinking (knowing) it was perfection.

This exact situation just happened to me! My AuDHD son befriended a kid he met over the summer. I met the mom for the 1st time last week. She told me her son has ADHD. I told her that me & my kids were all AuDHD. She said her youngest is autistic then, "we're all on the spectrum,"
I replied, "No."

This has been my experience, too. When I tell NT people I'm autistic, they aren't surprised at all. However, it's when I tell neurodivergent ppl who either don't realize/can't admit they are ND that I hear the "everyone is on the spectrum a little bit" comment.

Omg, yes! UPS was delivering a computer for Greg a couple weeks ago. The kids were stir-crazy, but I had to sign for the delivery. Greg was texting me: it's in our subdivision. Now it's turning onto our street 🤣
